God our Father, we learnt that we are not in charge of this world and our lives. We are so fragile. A small virus has brought the whole world to its knees, without distinction of nation, caste, colour, status, wealth or intelligence. The whole world was affected and is still affected. Our science and technology, our artificial intelligence, our learning, our health departments, the wealth of the few and our super rich, our stars (star actors, singers, models, pop stars), our armaments, our space rockets and huge skyscrapers, our amusement parks were all humbled before the face of a small virus. Ultimately even politicians had to fall back to you and we stared at the truth or reality that we are not in control of this world.
One of the greatest educators of Italy in the 19th centurey undoubtedly was St. John Bosco, a simple and dynamic priest of the archdiocese of Turin. The genius of the man was to base his system of education on `loving kindness` or amorevolezza as it is expressed in Italian. He knew from the very beginning that fear, control, strict rules and regulations would not help young persons to grow in freedom and responsibility. It goes without saying that loving kindness would remain the key factor that would determine the educational scenario of the future. In this sharing I would like to interpret `loving kindness` as `emotional guidance and accompaniment`.

When the German bishops returned to their homeland after the Council Vatican I, which proclaimed the universal supremacy of the Pope and his infallibility, the German Chancellor Otto Von Bismarck mocked them. He told them that they had become simply foot-soldiers and officers of the pope and had no power of their own. The following one hundred years of history until Vatican II bore witness to the juridically diminutive role of bishops. Balancing the power of papal office and that of bishops was one of the important tasks of Vatican II which, following the New Testament data and early Christian tradition, banked on the concept of collegiality.
The text below was written in July 2021, and sets out the theme of the work for the Salesians in 2022. Dear Brothers, Sisters and Friends, just six months go we gave the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians - as has been our radition since Don Bosco`s time - and the whole Salesian Family, the Strenna for the new year. Six months later, therefore, I have been asked to anticipate what could be the guiding theme for the new year 2022, as the different rhythms of the hemispheres where the Salesian presences are located demand. I do so gladly in the hope that it may be of some help.
The New Year is an opportunity to hope and to start again. We hope for a better future for the peoples of the world, for our brothers and sisters in India and Pakistan, for the people in Syria, Afghanistan, Iraq, in Israel/Palestine, the people of Sudan, Ethiopia and of North Korea. We also hope for a better future for our family members, our friends, for our parish community and the places we work. And above all it is a new beginning for me. I should look at every birthday, every New Year as a gift God gives. God gives me 365 days to love, to do good, to learn, to enjoy, to teach, to give and to pray. It is a brand new gift we get every year.
