Today in India, particularly in Tamil Nadu, we celebrate the feast of the martyr, St. John de Britto, who changed his name to ``Arulànandar`` in Tamil. I hear that he changed his name to Tamil, and dressed himself as the ordinary itinerant monks (or saadhus) of the era. He learned Tamil very quickly and preached the Gospel in the remotest villages. He wanted to identify himself totally with the local populations and found that his white skin was a hindrance. So, reportedly, he wrote to his friends in Portugal and asked them whether they have some kind of ointment that could turn his skin to be more brownish so that he could completely resemble his people! What a spirit of Incarnation and inculturation!

As we are in the Platinum Jubilee of our Province, I thought it apt to go back in history in some form to recapture the high lights, the twists and turns that shaped our beloved province to what it is today. In order to do this, I requested the former provincials of our Province (those who are living) themselves to speak. I posed two questions to them.
The response of the former Provincials is very enriching and it gives an overview of the different thrust they gave to the Province in keeping with the needs of the time, and the significant moments in carrying out their dreams. I thank our Provincials for their willingness to respond so promptly to my request and for all what they have been to us and the Province. I also thank the Vice-Provincials, Economers, and the Council Members who assisted them in all this.
Anniversary THE CENTENARY CELEBRATIONS OF SALESIAN PRESENCE IN INDIA 1906-2006, An Overview
#D.173 Reports Posted by National Delegate KUMPILUVELIL Louis
In the 365 days between 28 February 2005, when the Rector Major flagged off the centenary celebrations in New Delhi, and 27 February 2006, when the Government of India issued the Don Bosco Centenary commemorative stamp in Chennai (the last national-level centenary event), Salesians in South Asia witnessed some of the most memorable events in the annals of the Congregation in the region. It was indeed an year of grand celebrations, punctuated by programmes of varied nature – spiritual, intellectual, cultural and celebratory -- involving confreres in every province. These events and celebrations brought together confreres from the entire region of South Asia at various moments and in different locations, in the true Salesian spirit of joyful sharing and brotherly solidarity. + SPCSA Bulletin N.15

“Thank you India, from the bottom of our heart” – is what I would like to say to civil and church authorities, to families and young people – since India has opened its doors and welcomed the sons of Don Bosco, who felt at home here from the beginning, such that it seems that India is for Don Bosco and Don Bosco is for India. + SPCSA Bulletin N.15

Here I am at the conclusion of this beautiful and fruitful centenary and of its celebrations. A year ago when we opened it at New Delhi, I told you my dream for Salesian India. Today I cannot fail but repeat it since above all it has not changed – great dreams are far-sighted and long-lasting – but also because now knowing the situation of India and the Salesians better I am more than ever convinced of the accuracy of that dream of Don Bosco’ successor. I shall tell you why! + SPCSA Bulletin N.15

What does being a member of the Salesian Family mean today? How is the Lord calling us as members of the Salesian Family to respond to the needs of our world today? Where is the Salesian Family expanding and what are the reasons for this growth? Where is the Salesian Family presenting itself well and confidently and has this any relevance for the Salesian Family in our province? + SPCSA Bulletin N.15

The following is a slightly edited version of the transcription of the recording of the Rector Major’s talk to some 250 Salesians who had gathered at SIGA, Chennai, on 3 February 2006. The Rector Major spoke without a prepared text. + SPCSA Bulletin N.15

HOMILY – Eucharist
Conclusion of the Centenary in India
Ez 18:25-28; Ps 23; Phil 4:4-9; Mt 21:28-32
My dear Provincials, my dear confreres, my dear Salesian family members,
I am very happy to be celebrating this Eucharist with you at the beginning of this jubilee, this year of grace, which is the centenary of the Salesian presence in India. One hundred years have elapsed since the arrival of the first Salesians, and we cannot but be amazed at the enormous expansion of Don Bosco’s charism, the flowering of vocations, the development of the Salesian Family to the point where we can today say that the Congregation has an Indian face.
