Fr. Jose Kuttianimattathil, former Provincial Superior of Bangalore Province, has published an article on the question of voluntary renunciation of alcohol, in the latest issue of Bosco Udayam published from Kristu Jyoti College, Bangalore.
Echoing Pope John Paul II`s conviction that alcoholism is one of the worst plagues of modern society, he observes that today young people in particular are very much affected by alcoholism. When I begin to think deeply of the theme, I am amused for two reasons. First of all, there is the ironical fact that we human beings have to defend the rights of our children. This problem is unique to humankind, the most evolved part of the animal kingdom gifted with knowledge, freedom and love. Among animals there is no need for defending their young from the adults. What an irony that among human beings this has to be done. The second reason for my surprise is the fact that the Salesians and members of the Salesian Family have to discuss how to defend the rights of children in a serious seminar!
