Salesian Archbishop laid to rest amidst lakhs of faithful By INS CorrespondentShillong, Oct. 23. Shillong 23: Archbishop Dominic Jala sdb, Archbishop of Shillong Archdiocese was laid to rest on Wednesday on the premises of the Cathedral of Mary Help of Christians, Laitumkhrah as over a lakh of faithful paid their last respects to the catholic leader who passed away in a vehicle accident on 10 October in California, USA.
It was overwhelming to see as volunteers guided the people young and old to make their way to the funeral service which was scheduled at 1:00pm presided by Archbishop John Moolachira of Guwahati Archdiocese in the presence of fifteen other archbishops and bishops from all over India, over six hundred priests and countless religious brothers, sisters and seminarians.
Bishop Joshua Mar Ignatius, the vice president of CBCI and Bishop Victor Lyngdoh of Jowai Diocese delivered the homily in English and Khasi respectively recalled the contributions of the late Archbishop Dominic Jala.
After the Holy Mass, several condolence messages were read. There were messages from the Prefect of the Congregation for the Evagelization, from the Secretary of State from Vatican, from the Apostolic Nuncio and from Cardinal Alencherry. These were followed by the funeral orations by Archbishop Anil Joseph Thomas Cauto the chairman of CBCI office for clergy and religious dialogue. It was followed by the speech from Father Anselm Nonglang of Nongstoin Diocese, Father Hilarius Lamare - the VG of Jowai Diocese, Father Pius Shadap of Shillong Archdiocese, Father Paul Lyngkot the Salesian Provincial of Shillong Province, Dr Luise Jala - the elder brother of the late Archbishop Jala, fahter Paulson of Oakland Diocese, Sister Philomena Mathew MSMHC, Sister Martha Masynting VSDB, Rev Ramengliana - the secretary of the NEICC, Mr JA Lyngdon, Shri Vincent Pala, Shri Mukul Sangma, and Shri Conrad Sangma - the Chief Minister of Meghalaya. Father John Madur the Archdiocesan administrator then thanked everyone involved in preparation and excution of the fitting farewell to the Archbishop. He also recounted the contributions made by the Archbishop to him personally.
