Diamond Jubilee celebrations of Don Bosco School, Tura

The Chief Minister of Meghalaya Dr. Mukul Sangma along with the former Principals and Vice Principals fof Don Bosco School, Tura.

Guwahati, Oct. 26. The diamond jubilee celebrations of Don Bosco Higher Secondary School, Tura came to a close on 18th October, 2017 with a grand show. With fun and merriment the now 'senior citizen' has earned itself as one of most revered and most prestigious institution in the state of Meghalaya.

Meghalaya Chief Minister Dr. Mukul Sangma graced the occasion as chief guest, Bishop of Tura Rt. Rev Andrew R. Marak and Salesian Provincial, Father V M Thomas were guests of honour. Local MLA, Shri Noverfield Marak, Chief Executive Member of Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC), Shri Boston Marak and member of the council Shri Righteous Marak, Vice Provincial and former principal Father Januarius S. Sangma and other dignitaries were also present.

Speaking on the occasion the chief minister expressed his deep sense of appreciation to the Don Bosco Society for establishing the school at Tura at the very challenging time. Impressed by the performance of the students he gladly noted that Don Bosco School provides quality and holistic education.

Acknowledging its contribution in education in Garo Hills and appealing for collaborative partnership, he even urged the Salesian Society to establish a Don Bosco University in Garo hills. ''I request and urge upon the Salesian society to establish the University in Garo Hills to cater to the needs of higher education in Meghalaya''. He regretted that about 10 years earlier Meghalaya passed the bill for establishment of private Universities but unfortunately the Don Bosco Society could not consider setting up of a University in the state.

He also saw the Don Bosco Alumni as ready made partners in disseminating the positive narrative in the state. Amidst constraints the government tries to face the challenges in the educational sector, he added.

Others who spoke on the occasion were Rt. Rev. Andrew R Marak, bishop of Tura, Rev. VM Thomas, Salesian Provincial and Father Januarius Sangma, Vice-Provincial and former headmaster.

The large gathering of guests and parents delightfully witnessed a variety of colourful performances of cultural and modern dances, music, drill display, martial arts display, etc. One of the highlights was the felicitation of the former headmaster and assistant headmaster and retired teachers of the school.

The Diamond Jubilee Slab for an auditorium cum indoor stadium was also unveiled by the Chief Minister, blessed by Bishop Andrew R Marak in the presence of Fr. Presence of Fr. Provincial. After the unveiling the Chief Minster promised that the government will fund the construction of the auditorium cum indoor stadium.

Established by Father Anthony Buccieri, an Italian missionary in 1957 as a LP school to cater to the educational needs in Garo hills, the institution has grown by leaps and bounds. At present it has more than 2000 students (from nursery to class XII), over 100 teaching and non-teaching staff and its structure is one of the most imposing and prominent in the town of Tura. The school also has a night school which caters to the working boys of the town.

The school has produced luminaries in different fields politicians, academicians, bureaucrats, sports personalities including former Lok Sabha speaker Late Purno Agitok Sangma. Apart from imparting education, the school is well known for co-curricular activities.

The year long celebration saw different events like inter-school basketball tournament, inter-school singing and dance competition and rock concert by renowned band of Garo hills - Riprap. The curtain for the celebration came to a close with a cultural and musical evening by the students of the school.
