Guwahati, Jan. 31. Over 5300 students from 12 Salesian Schools and other Salesian family institutions of Guwahati participated in a Peace Rally on Friday, 30 January from Dighalipukri to Don Bosco School Panbazar in the city as part of the bicentennial commemoration of Don Bosco's birth.
The students enthusiastically took part in the rally with placards in hand. The special attractions of the colourful rally were the three bands from Don Bosco Schools Boko, Amguri, and city's Little Flower School, Hatigaon who played some beautiful music as the rally passed the main thoroughfares of the entire route.

The rally was flagged off by chief guest Dr. Dhruba Jyoti Saikia, Vice Chancellor, Cotton College State University in the presence of a number of dignitaries like Provincial Fr. VM Thomas, Vice Provincial Fr. Thomas Lakra, Province Economer Fr. K J Thomas, and a big number of Salesian Priests, Sisters and school alumni.

After the rally through the streets the programme continued in the school football field where a sea of students filled up the entire area. Songs for the function were rendered by 'Vibes', the host school's choir group led by music teacher Papu Gohain. Fr. VM Thomas in his speech reiterated the need for peace in today's global scenario and said that ''peace is possible'' if we all desired for it.

Chief guest Dr. Dhruba Jyoti Saikia said, ''The peace rally today was indeed grand and majestic. Don Bosco, the educator saint and friend of youth was an apostle of peace and a harbinger of social harmony. The Northeast region and Guwahati in particular had received much from Don Bosco especially in the field of education, youth empowerment and peace building. The Peace Rally was an expression of our faith in the possibility of peace. The cardinal ideals of Don Bosco - peace, love and compassion - should be imbibed by the present generation.'' Balloons and pigeons were also released on the occasion.

Fr. Johnson Parackal, Director of Don Bosco Institute, Kharguli, in his vote of thanks expressed gratitude to all the members of the Salesian family who joined hands together to make the Rally a successful one. ''Your participation shows your love for Don Bosco and his mission. May Don Bosco continue showering his blessings upon all,'' he said. He also expressed gratitude to all the students for their active and sincere participation. Snacks were distributed to all the students after the programme, and the slogan ''Long Live Don Bosco'' filled the entire playground.
