Shillong, Aug. 27. The Don Bosco Bicentenary celebrations in Mizoram commenced with the hoisting of the Bicentenary Flag atop the Seling Church on 16th August 2014. Fr. James Puthenthara, the Parish priest, in a message delivered after the flag hoisting, said the prominence that Mizo society gives to young people, is ''indeed a Salesian trait'' and makes Mizoram a unique destination for the Salesians. As of now, the Salesians have four presences in the state of Mizoram.
The Flag hoisting was immediately followed by the Holy Eucharist celebrated together with the Missionary Sisters of Mary Help of Christians, the hostel boys and girls and many parishioners.

During the homily, Fr. Anthony Valluran explained to those present, the meaning of the Bicentenary Celebration and its significance.  He said the yearlong celebration held throughout the Salesian world is to thank God for the gift of Don Bosco to the Salesian Family, the Church and the world at large; it is also an opportunity for the Salesians to be encouraged and strengthened to live better the Charism of Don Bosco in the present times. The yearlong celebrations, one hopes, will bring more vocations to the Salesian Congregation and the Church.

Fr. Valluran also spoke about the early life of Johnny Bosco, the struggles and obstacles he faced in following his vocation and his generous decision to give his very best and the whole of his life as a priest working for the benefit of the poor young people.

After the Holy Mass, sweets and snacks were distributed to those present.
