Symposium held on Working With Street Children at Anbu Illam Salem

Tiruchy, Jan. 29. Don Bosco Anbu Illam, Salem, organized a Symposium on ''Working with Street Children: Its Challenges and Prospects'' in view of its Silver Jubilee Celebrations. The event was inaugurated by Fr. Albert Johnson SDB, the Provincial of Salesian Province of Tiruchy on 29 January 2014 at 9.30 am. Salesians, religious, research scholars, social work practitioners, NGO Representatives, human rights activists and government officials participated in the Symposium.

Mr. Henry Rosario MSW, PhD presented the concept paper  on the Global scenario of working with street children and the various challenges and prospects that are evidenced today in working with them.

In the second session Fr. Amala Jeyarayan SDB. MSW Ph.D. examined Don Bosco's approach in working with street children and the challenges which were faced by him. Thereafter Sr. Mary Isabella MSW, M.Phil presented a paper on dealing specifically with the challenges in working with female street children.

The panel discussion that followed was moderated by Rev. Fr. Arul Maran SDB, Head of the YaR Commission in the Salesian Province of Tiruchy. Taking part in the panel discussion were Mr. Senthil Kumar, District Child Protection Officer, Coimbatore and Dr. S. Ramanathan, M.A., Ph.D., Senior Psychologist in Chengalpattu. A question hour was conducted thereafter duirng which several valuable and innovative ideas in working for the street children were brought out and discussed.

The Symposium ended with a Valedictory function in which Dr. R. Anbu M.A., Ph.D., District Social Welfare Officer, Salem, gave the concluding address.

The Symposium was convened by the Rector, Salesians and Staff of Don Bosco Anbu Illam. Incidentally Anbu Illam is celebrating its silver jubilee of foundation and the work it has rendered in the field of rehabilitation of street and vagrant children.
