Inauguration of Fr. Joseph Arokiasamy Memorial Block for Fishery Science By Fr. Joby JosephShillong, Sep. 17. On the 9th September 2013, St. Anthony's College, Shillong crossed another milestone with the inauguration of Fr. Joseph Arokiasamy Memorial Block for the Department of Fishery Science by Shri W. M. S Pariat, Chief Secretary, Government of Meghalaya. The block was also blessed by Rev. Fr. Joseph Nellanat Sdb, the Former Vice-Principal who was in service for twenty one years in the college. The College till date continues to uphold the record as the first and only College in the State with a Department in Fishery Science.
The inauguration by Shri W. M. S Pariat, Chief Secretary of the Meghalaya Government took place in the presence of Shri K. N Kumar, IAS Principal Secretary (Fisheries), Shri R. M Mishra, IAS Secretary Planning Government of Meghalaya, Fr. Saji Stephen Sdb, the Rector of the College, Bro. Albert L Dkhar Sdb, the Principal, Fr. Joby Joseph Sdb, the Vice principal, and other government dignitaries, staff and students of the college.
The foundation stone had been laid on 8th December 2012, a Memorial day for the sons of Don Bosco, and in a short span of nine months the work was completed. After the blessing of the new block, a small felicitation programme was held in the college auditorium during which Fr. D. John SDB, founder and former director of the media department of the college, gave a life sketch of the legend - Fr. Joseph Arokiasamy. ''His vision about higher education and the impetus that he gave to Anthony's is which made the college what it is today'', reminisced Fr. D. John.
Shri W. M. S Pariat, the Chief Guest, mentioned that the Aqua Mission is one of the nine missions in the state which targets the youth of the state to make use of the natural resources of the state. In this regard, St. Anthony's College automatically becomes an active partner in achieving this target. The dream is not only to have a structure but more in the 'the building of human potential to achieve self-sufficiency in the state. Shri K. N Kumar, IAS Principal Secretary (Fisheries), deserves a special mention and gratitude from the college for having taken a persoanl and special interest in the entire project. The project is also partially funded by the Government of Meghalaya.
During the programme, the Fishery Department of the state also released the video of the Aqua Mission and did its first screening. The students of Fishery Department delighted gathering with their melodious songs on the Aqua mission sung in three languages of English, Khasi and Garo. The programme ended with a vote of thanks from Dr. R N Bhuyan, the Head of the Deparment of Fishery Science of the college followed by refreshments for all the participants.
