Fr. Joe Mannath Appointed National Secretary of Conference of Religious India

Kolkata, May. 3. Fr. Joe Mannath SDB, a Salesian of the Province of Chennai, was elected to head the Conference of Religious of India (CRI) as its National Secretary, on 25th April. The appointment was made by the 30 member CRI National Executive which met in Bangalore for its executive meeting a week ago. Fr. Mannath is to exercise this leadership role for the next 4 years, taking over from the erstwhile National Secretary, Br. Mani Mekkunnel SG, from 24th May 2013.
Fr. Mannath is well known to the Indian Church through his writings, animation programmes and consultative services especially in the field of guidance and counselling. He had been a Formator for many years in the Regional Diocesan Major Seminary of Poonamallee, in Tamil Nadu, and then later as Professor in Madras University. Currently he is on the Staff at Don Bosco Renewal Centre, Bangalore, an ongoing Formation Centre of the Salesians of South Asia.

Of Fr. Mannath the CRI Bulletin says, ''Experienced in conducting programmes the world over Fr. Joe is a visionary with practical applications for better life. A non-conformist who articulates his thoughts in speech and writing, he is sure to bring his global experience to the Major Superiors of India.''

The National Secretary plays a key role in the activities of the Conference of Religious India, and will be operating from the National Secretariat at Okhla, New Delhi, along with a national Team of religious who are experts in different fields.

The CRI is a large Catholic network organisation with 13 Regional units and 160 Local Units in every Diocese across the country. The 1 lakh and 30 thousand Religious of India who come under the CRI form probably the largest and the most powerful religious entity in the Indian society as a whole actively engaged in multifaceted services to the Nation. It is a competent body of highly committed people.

Fr. Mannath, on the day of taking over as National Secretary, on 24th May 2013, will be completing 51 years of religious life as a Salesian.
