International Women's Day at Don Bosco, Hospet

Bangalore, Mar. 18. About 2500 women from more than 240 Self Help Groups participated in the International Women's Day Celebrations held at Hospet, Karnataka on 14 March 2013.
Th event was jointly organized by Don Bosco and Taruni Mahilabhivridhi organization. The day's programme consisted of a short inaugural function, rally and giving of memorandums to the government officials. The theme chosen for the event was prevention of violence against women.

The inaugural function and the flagging off ceremony were held in front of the City Municipal office.  The key speaker for the function was Mrs. Sunitha from the Department of Women and Child Welfare. She spoke about the various types of violence meted out to women in the society and the possible supports available from the government departments.

The other speakers for the occasion were Mrs. Savithri (President of Taruni organization), Fr. Varghese Pallipuram (Director of Don Bosco),Mr. Jayanth (a well-known social worker), Mrs. Bhagyalakshmi (Advocate) and Mrs. Basanthi (Treasurer of Taruni organization). All of them spoke about the importance of stopping the various forms violence against women and giving them the rightful place in the society.

After the inaugural function, the chief guests flagged off the rally. The rally went through the main streets of Hospet town. It was a beautiful sight to witness women from different areas participating in the rally, shouting slogans. The message communicated through this rally was that women are in need of protection and their rights will have to be respected. The rally took about 2 hours to reach from city municipal office to Don Bosco Campus. It concluded with lunch.

In the afternoon, the office bearers of Taruni organization gave memorandums to various government departments like Police, Women and Child Welfare, Social Welfare, Taluk Office, Taluk Gram Panchayath office etc. The main content of the memorandum was to provide protection to women and to take action against those who are responsible for violating the rights women.
