Regional Salesian Youth Convention Held at Cherrapunjee By Fr. Michael Makri SDBShillong, Feb. 20. The regional Salesian youth convention was held at the shrine of St. John Bosco at Cherrapunjee from 15th to the 17th February 2013. More than 800 young people from all over North East participated in this mega event organized by the Salesian Youth Movement (SYM) department of Silchar province. TOGETHER TOWARDS A BETTER WORLD was the well chosen theme of the youth gathering.
In preparation for the Bicentennial birth anniversary of Don Bosco in 2015 and in tune with the Year of Faith as declared by the Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI, the Youth delegation of the province animated the youth convention. The mega event kick started on the 15th February by the Inauguration ceremony at 5pm, several programs including songs, dances, skits and messages were presented.
Gracing the occasion were Fr. Paul Olphindro, the vice Provincial, Sr. Cecilia Sad, the mother general of the VSDB, the Vice Provincial of the MSMHC, Fr. Gervasis, the Parish priest, Prof. Sylvanus Lamare, the principal of St. Edmunds, and other dignitaries.
The Salesian Novices from Sunnyside presented the person of 'Don Bosco' in the form of songs and dances. The first day concluded with a good night talk by Fr. Barnes Mawrie, the convener of the convention.
Archbishop Dominic Jala presided over the Holy Eucharistic celebration on 16th, and in the homily he asked the youth to be bearers of Don Bosco's values and transform society. Sir Gregory Kharumnuid then presented to the youth ways and means to be 'together towards a better world'. During the second session animated by Fr. VT Jose on Salesian youth spirituality, the animator asked the youth to become saints and told them that sanctity is possible for everyone.
The third session on Youth and Media by Fr. Michael Makri, kept the youth glued to the screen as the animator presented them facts and reality of how media has affected youth both positively and negatively and how they can overcome the adverse effects of Media.
Next session was taken by Fr. Devasia, on 'youth and family life'. Besides taking the session on such an interesting topic, the animator prayed for all of them in charismatic style. A CAMP FIRE brought the day to an end.
The concluding day started with the Morning Prayer led by the VSDB sisters. At 9:00am the youth was given an input session on 'Evils in society' by Prof. Frederick from St. Anthony's College.
Crowning this mega event was the Holy Eucharistic Celebration presided over by Rev. Fr. George Maliekal the Provincial of Silchar Province together with 15 Salesian priests. Addressing the 1000 strong gathering, Fr. Provincial pointed out that ''the Salesian trusts the youth and that the youth can change society'.
YOUTH FORUM followed a short lunch break, where different items were presented and several talks were given to the benefit of young people.
The event was a success due to the relentless hard work of organizers, sponsors, well-wishers and the various groups. Fr. Provincial and the Provincial team; Fr. Gervasius and the parishioners of Cherrapunjee parish; FMA, MSMHC, VSDB, and RNDM sisters; brothers from Sacred Heart Theological College; SDB, FMA, VSDB novices, all contributed to the success of this convention.
