Guwahati, Nov. 2.  Turin: Italian artist of international repute Brother Guerrino Pera died yesterday All Saints Day at Leumaan, Turin.
The 78-year-old Salesian was fighting cancer of the liver for past few years.
The funeral will be held on Monday (4th November) at the Basilica of Mary Help of Christians, at Valdocco, Turin.
Br Pera's connection with India began in 1977 when he came to Calcutta to help set up the first Salesian Catechetical and Audio Visual center in India then known as Don Bosco Catechetical and Multimedia Centre.

''Today, Nitika Don Bosco Kolkata remembers Br Pera with much affection and gratitude,'' says former director Fr C.M. Paul who worked with Br. Pera both as a brother and later as priest.

Brother Pera was ''a magnificent Salesian, enthusiastic evangelist and passionate catechist for images,'' Fr Paul added.

Br Pera travelled extensively in India in 1970s and 1980s taking hundreds of photos and slides for Nitika Don Bosco.
After being diagnosed with cancer, he underwent chemotherapy. Despite severe lower back pain he pursued his catechetical creations.

''We used to feature four to five pages (one page for each Sunday) of Pera's creations in every issue of our national magazine for catechism teachers,'' says Fr Umberto Devanna editor of Dossier Catechista - leading Catechetical magazine in Italy which has a monthly print order of more than 80,000 copies.

''Congregation needs to prepare more personnel for this all important task,'' insisted Br Guerrino. He was lamenting that ''we have not heeded to the call of Don Bosco, whose passion was catechesis.''

A born fighter and enthusiastic catechist, Br Guerrino's artistic creations go under the popular and modern art brand of PERA.

A prolific artist who combined photography and painting, Br Guerrino has been working from his studios at the Salesian Congregation's numero uno Catechetical and Publication Centre in Turin popularly known as Leumann- Elledici short form for Libreria Dottrina Cristiana for over 40 years.

Starting with Kodakchrome color slides, Br Guerrino was fascinated by the E6 Process in color slide making, the new rave of the 1970s and got hooked to it for all his Indian slides. Today most of Br Guerrino's slides have been scanned and digitalized.
