By KOONAN Thomas
Bangalore, Dec. 22. Fr. C.M. Joseph Cherukunnel SDB, of the Province of Bangalore, successfully defended his Ph.D. (Psychology) at Bharathiar University, Coimbatore on December 20, 2010.
The topic of the research: The Psychological Problems of Adolescents Separated from Parents and the Efficacy of Homeostasis Reality Therapy. The study was supervised and guided by Dr. S. John Michael Raj (Professor, Department of Psychology, Bharathiar University, Coimbatore).  The Examiners were Dr. V. Suresh (Professor & Head, Department of Psychology, Annamalai University, Chidambaram) and Dr. S. John Michael Raj (Professor, Department of Psychology, Bharathiar University, Coimbatore).

The Viva-Voce was well attended by the Faculties of the Department of Psychology, some Faculties from other Departments, and Research Scholars and Students of the Psychology Department. Some Salesians and a few family members of Fr. C.M. Joseph also were present. The presentation was excellent and received great appreciation.  Clarifications and the open forum too were well appreciated.

A gist of the Thesis:

Over the years the innovations in Science and Technology have increased the mobility of people.  Today the Economic and Social factors compel people to leave their homes in pursuit of better prospects.  This has silently induced a sizable number of adolescents to live separate from their parents.  The separation from parents seems to induce personal and psychological problems to the adolescents.

An attempt is made in this study to find out the psychological effects of separation. Specifically, the study focuses on the levels of psychological problems of the adolescents whose both parents are away, one parent is away and those who are living with both parents. Further, the study also tries to find out the effect of Homeostasis Reality Therapy (HRT) as an intervention tool to harness the effect of psychological problems faced by adolescents due to separation from their parents.

The results show that the separation of parents from adolescents has deleterious effects on the behavioural patterns of adolescents. This problem is very alarming and such adolescents need to be taken care of specially. The Homeostasis Reality Therapy (HRT) is seen to be an effective intervention for the well being of adolescents separated from their parents.

The Province of Bangalore congratulates Fr Joseph Cherukunnel SDB on this meritorious achievement.
