FIRE IN KURLA RESTAURANT KILLS 8, SEVEN OF THEM STUDENTS OF DON BOSCO INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY,KURLA, MUMBAI

Mumbai, Oct. 17. For the management, teachers and students of the Don Bosco Institute of Technology, Mumbai, five-minute walk away from Hotel City Kinara, the news of the fire at the eatery came as a shock, as seven students from the college died in the incident.

Eight persons, including seven students of the Don Bosco Institute of Technology, were on Friday killed in a blaze that engulfed a popular eatery in Kurla (West), allegedly caused by a cooking gas leak. Police, however, ruled out an explosion while the fire department is investigating if faulty wiring led to a short circuit.

The incident took place around 1 pm at a Chinese-cum-fast food restaurant named City Kinara on Premier Road, located near Christian village and opposite Holy Cross High School, when the eight patrons including a woman were dining on the first floor. The area has several educational institutions and offices. The seven students have been identified as Bernadette DSouza, Erwin DSouza,Sajid Chaudhary, Brian Fernando, Taha Shaikh, Sharjeeel Shaikh, Akash Thapar, along with Arvind Kanojia.

The families of the victims were inconsolable as the police carried out the identification of the '' completely charred bodies''. They were all brought dead. There was nothing we could do,'' said D Vidya Thakur, medical superintendent, Rajawadi Hospital, Ghatkkopar.

Police said the restaurant staff managed to escape unhurt as the kitchen was located on the ground floor. The patrons, however, were trapped and died within minutes of a sudden, intense fire which remained confined to the first floor. There was no blast, officials said.

Two fire engines rushed to the spot and doused the blaze in 15-20 minutes, following which police and fire officials pulled out eight charred bodies and took them to Rajawadi Hospital in Ghatkopar (East).
