Kolkata, Jul. 28. .   Utrail:  Youth centre activities in  Utrail, Bangladesh, received a major fillip with the inauguration of a composite youth centre building by Fr. Guillermo Basañes SDB, on 25 July 2014 to facilitate the formation of youth through various residential and non residential programmes.

Fr. Guillermo Basañes SDB, General Councillor for Missions, who arrived in Bangladesh on 24 July 2014, for a weeklong visit to encourage the missionary activity of the Salesians in Bangladesh inaugurated the Don Bosco Youth Centre on 25 July 2014 at Telungia, Utrail and dedicated it to the youth of Bangladesh.  He was accompanied by Fr. Joseph Anikuzhikattil SDB, the secretary of the Department of the Missions, Rome.

The youth centre has around one hundred registered youth and a fifty non-registered youth who participate in the youth centre activities. The Salesians expect the number to swell further with the inauguration of the youth centre building. Around Three hundred children frequent the youth centre for the Sunday Oratory.

Speaking after the inauguration Fr. Basañes said, ''25 July 2014 is a historical day in the history of Salesians in Don Bosco. Today a new baby is born. The school existed before we came. The parish existed before we came. But today we have added our original contribution to the Church in Bangladesh. We have to nurture this youth centre the newly born baby.''

''Salesian work started with the youth centre. Schools and colleges were the fruits of the youth centre. But unfortunately today institutions hog the limelight and the youth centres have become an appendix in the Sunday afternoon. Make sure youth centre remains active and fully committed to the formation of young,'' he told the Salesians.
He congratulated the Rector of the community and the Salesians, for the yeomen service they are doing in Bangladesh and in particular for making Don Bosco Youth Centre a reality.

Youth of the parish along with the pre-novices and aspirants organized a colourful cultural programme. The scintillating performance of the youngsters left everyone mesmerized.
On his arrival Fr. Basañes met the confreres, pre-novices and aspirants and also visited a few mission stations. ''This is my maiden visit to Asia and I am happy to have started it with Bangladesh.'' Quoting the fellow Argentinean pope and the GC 27 which emphasized on going to the periphery, he said, ''Bangladesh is truly a periphery and hence my visit is all the more significant.''
