National Seminar on Autonomy Organized by Salesian College Campus

Kolkata, Aug. 27. The IQAC of Salesian College, headed by Fr. Mathew George & his team with the help of the college management, organised a 2 day, NAAC (National Assessment and Accreditation Council) sponsored National level seminar on 'AUTONOMY: A means to quality enhancement.' The seminar was held at Salesian College - Siliguri Campus from 23rd to 24th August, 2013.
The programme witnessed the presence of eminent educationists, like Prof. Prabir Kumar Das, Secretary, West Bengal State Higher Education Council, Prof. Indrajit Ray, Vice-chancellor, Panchanan Burma University and Fr.(Prof.) C. M. Varghese sdb, Principal, Sacred Heart College (Autonomous) , Tirupattur.

The seminar began on the 23rd August 2013, with Fr (Dr.) Nirmal Gomes, Rector, Salesian College - Siliguri Campus leading the prayer & lamp lighting service followed by Fr (Dr.) Mathew George, Co-ordinator, IQAC welcoming the guests & participants. Professors Prabir Kumar Das and Indrajit Ray, gave the presidential address and the inaugural address respectively, where both highlighted the need of autonomy, and how it could benefit the college, specially the students, in terms of up to date syllabi, transparency in evaluation etc.

The rationale for autonomy was presented by Fr (Dr.) George Thadathil, Principal, Salesian College, mentioning the constraints higher education is facing in the current scenario and stressed the need for quality enhancement for higher education. Fr (Dr.) James Chacko, Vice-principal (day session), Salesian College - Siliguri Campus, presented a case study on benefits of autonomy experienced by higher educational institutions in Philippines.

The seminar moved into the plenary session later that day with Fr (Dr.) James Chacko, chairing the session and Fr (Prof) C. M. Varghese presenting his views on 'AUTONOMY: A means to quality enhancement' and his experience with the autonomy of Sacred Heart College. The plenary session was followed by a Technical Session where Mr. Shomik Saha, Head, department of business administration, presented his study on the assessment and evaluation of examination system in Salesian College. The last presentation of the seminar was made by Mr. Uday Kumar Shaw & Durga Kumari Sah, Assist. Professors, Dept. of History, Salesian College- Sonada Campus: Evaluating the role of Indian Libraries in the Social Science research work. The session was chaired by Fr (Prof.) C. M. Varghese sdb.

Day one ended with discussions between student groups of various streams and faculties of various departments of the college on the following topics: College to Community (Lab to Land) - How do you bridge through academic creativity? What are the possible ICT enabled innovations in teaching-learning? Your model examination, evaluation system ensuring transparency. What are your suggestions? Choice Based Credit Systems (CBCS) - Your suggestions for intra & inter departmental choices / Skill training?

The seminar concluded on the 24th of August with the faculties & students presenting their views after the discussions of the previous day and Fr (Dr.) Nirmol Gomes, making his observations about the seminar.
