A Re-reading of the Salesian Preventive System in Rome By Joy Kaipan, SDBKolkata, May. 15. Fr. Dominic Sequeira of the Sacred Heart Province of Bangalore (INK), successfully defended his doctoral thesis ''A Re-reading of the Salesian Preventive System from the Perspective of Moral Development in the Light of Recent Findings in Character Education: A Research to Facilitate Criteria for the Moral Development of Students in the Formal Salesian Academic Institutions in Karnataka (India),'' at the Salesian Pontifical University, Rome, on 13 May 2013.
The research in five chapters, begins with an in-depth study of 'Value Education' in Karnataka with a special focus on the integral development of students within formal Salesian academic institutions. It then proceeds on to understanding the movement of Character Education and explores the Salesian Preventive System from the perspective of moral development. A're-reading' places and culls out the themes, methods, principles and strategies for moral development found in the Salesian Preventive System and concludes with facilitative criteria for the moral development of the students, within the formal Salesian academic institutions in Karnataka.
Fr. Sequeira's research guide, Prof. Michele Pellerey, eminent Professor, author of numerous books and a former Rector Magnificus of the Salesian Pontifical University, praised the candidate for his scholarly approach and precision. Prof. Dariusz Grzadziel, and Prof. Cyril De Souza were the second and third guides respectively. The examining panel also comprised Prof. Carlo Nanni, current Rector Magnificus and Fr. Jarosław Rochowiak, the Secretary General of the Salesian Pontifical University.
Fr Sequeira in his inimitably serene and composed manner responded to the clarifications sought by the panel of experts, with great clarity. The defense of the doctoral thesis was witnessed by a packed auditorium with a keenly interested scholarly audience who appreciated the 're-reading' and applauded the candidate.
Giving voice to the general feeling, one in the audience remarked: ''It is such a necessary theme, in this present time and Fr Sequeira has very pertinently addressed it. Of course, he focuses only on Karnataka, but it could be applied to any of the formal Salesian academic institutions in the world.''
