Indian Salesian completes Post-Doctoral in Logotherapy

Guwahati, Oct. 24. A Kolkata province Salesian has received the ''Post Doctoral Diplomate,'' the final credential in logotherapy from the Viktor Frankl Institute, Dallas, Texas.

The Institute conferred the accreditation for Dr Joseph Thannickal's work exploring the relationship between meaning in life and religious leadership. This work will be reviewed soon in their International journal of Logotherapy.

The Salesian priest, who has completed three terms as the program director of Don Bosco Renewal Center, Bangalore, is currently a visiting scholar at Fordham University, New York. Next January he is scheduled to do further work at the Jesuit School of Theology in Berkeley, California.

His current writing interest centers on Methodologies in Religious and Clergy formation. Nearly 20 years spent for formation and ongoing formation will be the backdrop for the project for which Fordham University's School of Religious Education is providing significant academic support.

Fr. Thannickal is expected to be back in India during November-January to complete a field study relating to the same project.

His earlier book Gifted Journey on the application of logotherapy within a Christian paradigm published by Pauline Media is now going into third print.

Neurologist and psychiatrist Viktor Frankl (1905-1997) developed logotherapy, considered the ''Third Viennese School of Psychotherapy'' after Freud's psychoanalysis and Adler's individual psychology.

A short introduction to this system is given in Frankl's most famous book, ''Man's Search for Meaning,'' where the late neurologist outlines how his theories had helped him survive his Holocaust experience and how that experience had further developed and reinforced his theories.
