Fr. Christopher Packianathan SDB Passes Away

Tiruchy, Jan. 24. The Tiruchy salesian province lost its second eldest confrere Rev. Fr. Christopher Packianathan SDB, 84, yesterday at 10.30 p.m. He passed away at Child Jesus Hospital, Tiruchy after a weeklong treatment. His funeral was held today at AMSAM, Tiruchy around 10 am. Hundreds of salesians, members of salesian family, relatives, friends and faithful participated in the grace filled funeral.
Fr. Christy was born in Kotegiri in 1929 to Mr. Antony Packianathan and Mrs. Arockia Mary as their fifth child. He did his primary schooling at St. Mary's Middle School, Kotegiri. Following the guidance of his vocation promoter he joined the Tirupattur Sacred Heart Seminary in 1948. He began his novitiate on 15 May 1950 and made his first Religious Profession at its completion.

Fr. Christopher did his intermediate studies at Sacred Heart College in the year1953 and his T.S.L.C studies at St. Gabriel Teachers Training Institute in the Year 1954. He did his practical training for three years from1954-1957 at Dominic Savio, Tirupattur. On 24 May, 1957 he made his perpetual profession.  

Thereafter he did his theology at Sacred Heart Seminary, Mawlai, Shillong from 1957. He was ordained a deacon on 6 December 1961, and ordained priest at Sacred Heart Church, tirupattur by Bishop David Marianayagam on 1 July 1961.

Fr. Christopher served as Headmaster at Dominic Savio, Tirupattur, and has served as Administrator and Assistant Parish Priest at several places such as Egmore Don Bosco, Katpadi, Broadway Refuge and so on. He was a zealous pastor at parishes like Oragadam, Lourdes Shrine , K. Pudur, Madurai, Madhakottai, Lourdes Shrine, Perambur. He was a lover of the poor and a father as rector at houses such as Egmore and St. Mary's, Chennai.

Fr. Christopher was a seeker of souls, especially as confessor at several houses such at Alangulam, Vellakinar-Coimbatore, Thanjavur, and Don Bosco Provincial House, Kallukuzhy, Tiruchy.

He was serene and peaceful in his last days. He died due to obstruction in the intestines and cardiac arrest. It was a peaceful death after receiving the anointing of the sick and amidst prayers of salesians and other religious.

Fr. Christopher's funeral was held today at AMSAM, Tiruchy around 10 am. Hundreds of salesians, members of salesian family, relatives, friends and faithful took part in the grace filled funeral.
