Tiruchy, Nov. 25. .  Coimbatore:  Commissions for Young at Risk and Rural Ministry of Salesian Province of Tiruchy jointly organised the children's Parliament convention on the theme 'Children and Media World' in Coimbatore on 23rd and 24th November 2013. Nearly 380 children's parliament leaders and 54 youth volunteers participated.  Children from 11 Don Bosco Institutions and 16 other voluntary organisations from Southern Tamil Nadu participated. Alaihal Media, the Social Communication Centre of the Province, animated the children on the impact and constructive use of media.
Art. 17 of the Convention on the Rights of the Child spells out the important role of media to disseminate information that promotes the child's well-being and giving specific tasks to States. State Parties recognize the important function performed by the mass media and shall ensure that the child has access to information and material from a diversity of national and international sources, especially those aimed at the promotion of his or her social, spiritual and moral well-being and physical and mental health.

In the age of information, children have access to all electronic goods as adults and become one of the important consumers. Children Parliaments and Media clubs of the province are very active in imparting media education, so that children use media ethically and also for their progress. Hence the DBYA theme of 'Media' was chosen for this year's convention.

A book ''Valaralam Vanga''  (Value Education Sessions for Children) prepared by VEMBU, was released by Ms. Latika, Chief Education Officer (SSA). Children participated with much enthusiasm in the event and resolved to view media critically and use it ethically. Don Bosco Anbu Illam, Coimbatore hosted the event.
