Don Bosco Vocational Training Centre opened in Krishnagar (W.B.) District Jail By - Fr. Scaria Nedumattathil SDBKolkata, Sep. 6. Don Bosco Prison Ministry Inaugurated its third Vocational Training Centre (VTC) on Septemebr 4, 2012 in West Bengal. This time the Vocational Training Centre was opened inside the Krishnanagar District jail, while the previous two were in Berhampore and Midnapore districts.
The VTC was inaugurated by Mr. Ramvir Kumar IPS, inspector General of Correctional Services (Prisons ), and thereafter blessed by Rt. Rev. Joseph Gomes SDB, Bishop of Krisnagar. The opening ceremony was attended by a large number of Clergy and Religious besides other lay people.
The vocational training centre has begun with four sections - viz. Computer, Electrical (House wiring & motor winding), Garment making & Welding. Other suitable trades will be added later.
The centre is the result of the collaborative effort and determination of the staff and Inmates of the Prison as well as Don Bosco Prison Ministry. ''The prisoners had to work days and nights to make this project a success. They put extra effort to get the place in shape to have the inauguration on 4th September'', acknowledged, Fr. NT Scaria, the pioneer of Don Bosco Prison Ministry in West Bengal.
Don Bosco Prison Ministry also acknowledged with pride and satisfaction that Mr. Nazurul Islam, the superintendent of Prisons, himself contributed cash for the project when urgent requirements occurred.
The VTC will be run in collaboration with Don Bosco Technical School, Krishnagar. The project will be jointly supervised by Fr. T.L. Francis, of Don Bosco Prison Ministry Berhampore, and Fr. Mani Manual, Superintendent of Don Bosco Technical School Krishnagar. Fr. K. T. Thomas, Rector of Don Bosco Krishangar, has taken a keen interest in the project and has assured its continuity.
Don Bosco Prison Ministry started its first Vocational Training Centre in 1998 as a pilot project inside Berhampore Central Prison which has over 2000 prisoners. Thereafter a VTC was started in Midnapore Central Prison which has about 1300 prisoners. The third vocational training centre has been set up at the District Jail in Krishnagar.
Mr. Sankar Chakravorty, Minister In-charge of Prisons, and Mr. Ranvir Kumar IPS, Inspector General of Prisons, have requested Don Bosco Prison Ministry to start a similar centre at Jalpaiguri Central Jail, for which fesability studies are in the process.
With the series of Vocational Training Centres being established in prisons, Don Bosco Prison Ministry in West Bengal is lighting up the lives of hundreds of prison inmates and giving wings to their hopes for living in dignity beyond the prison walls.
