PEACE MARCH IN HONOUR OF FR. CONVERTINI, SERVANT OF GOD

Kolkata, Mar. 16. A Peace March through the streets of Krishnagar and a Memorial Service in the Cathedral Premises were jointly organized by the Salesian Province of Kolkata and the Diocese of Krishnagar on 12th March, 2011 with a participation of 300 young people, in honour of Fr. Francis Convertini SDB, Servant of God.

''We want to present to you young people the wonderful saintly missionary Fr. Convertini that you may know him, love him and have a great devotion to him,'' explained Fr. Samuel Mondol in his introductory comments.

The day's proceedings commenced with the Peace March waved off at 9.15 AM from Don Bosco Youth Centre by his Lordship Bishop Joseph Gomes. Young people wearing blue caps with the inscription 'Convertini', carrying banners and flexes displaying the holy life of the Missionary, caught the attention of the people.

A memorial service, Holy Eucharist, visit and prayer at the tomb of the Servant of God by the Parish youth groups and screening of the movie on Fr. Francis Convertini were the highlights of the day.

During the Memorial Service a song on Fr. Convertini composed by Mr. Apurbo Haldar was sung by the composer himself. Several elderly people who lived in his time and had the joy of making confessions to him gave a heart-rending testimony of his holiness.

Fr. Rosario Stroscio, the former provincial of Kolkata who hails from the home land of Fr. Convertini affirmed that he was a holy Salesian who died saying ''I have tried never to offend you Mother Mary, now take care of me.''

Fr. Convertini was born at Cisternino in the Province of Puglia in Southern Italy in 1898. He passed away on 11th February 1976. The Cause of his beatification and canonization was introduced in 1997.
