Hyderabad, Aug. 21. Don Bosco institutions at Warangal and Ravulapalem, with assistance from Bosco Seva Kendra [BSK] are reaching put to the people who have been severely affected due to the rains, especially in Warangal District, which includes Hanumankonda, Kazipet and Warangal towns. The Salesian communities which have been in existence for the past 25 years in Warangal and East Godavari districts, are engaged in the relief work for 1000 flood victims and their families.
According to the Indian Metrological Department (IMD) data, Warangal district received a total of 426.2 mm rainfall with Hanumankonda registering 223 mm of rainfall or what is equivalent to half of the season's rain in a day. Large parts of Warangal have been inundated and a chunk of the national highway washed away, making it difficult for people to move to safety. Hanumankonda town and adjoining areas have turned into lakes as the municipal authorities failed to clear storm water drains.

Over 600 buildings have been declared vulnerable. Thousands of huts and small houses have collapsed, main roads are damaged, and lakhs of trees uprooted, with hundreds of electric posts strewn across streets and pavements due to the unrelenting heavy downpour. The large-scale damage has laid waste physical infrastructure, transportation, communication systems, power, water and sanitary systems including habitation in coastal, rural and tribal areas.

Bosco Seva Kendra (BSK) thus far busy with the COVID-19 outreach in the states of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and South Odisha, has its task compounded with the havoc wreaked by the torrential rain. The major concern right now is access to immediate food supply, non-food items, repair of damaged houses and restoration of the livelihoods of the affected people.  Therefore, the affected need to be supplied as earliest as possible with relief materials such as rice, dal, oil, sugar, onions, and kerosene. Non-food items like bed sheets, towels, and utensils are also to be made available to the affected, and to repair the damaged houses and restore the livelihood of the poor.
