University team leaves for flood relief

Guwahati, Sep. 30. Responding to last week's floods that ravaged several villages in Assam, Don Bosco University students and faculty have formed three teams to help with relief and rehabilitation. Under the leadership of MSW Department Dr Riju Sharma, two teams swung into action to mobilize relief and rehabilitation materials from Shillong and Guwahati, while a third team has gone to the field camps.

A ten-member (all boys) flood relief team from ADBU set out today (Tuesday, 30 Sept 2014) to bring relief and help with the rehabilitation of the people of Garo bustee at Hahim, in the Boko Circle, of rural Kamrup district, some 65 kms away from the university. faculty member Mr Victor Nazary is the team leader.

Twelve houses have been wiped out with the fury of the flood waters. Scores of houses damaged... standing crops, livestock and property lost.

A team consisting of MSW faculty Fr Jose Karipadam and students visited Hahim on Sunday (28 Sept) to assess the situation.

On Monday (29 Sept) they mobilized university authorities, faculty and students, even though the university is closed for the puja holidays since Saturday, 27 September.

While two groups of students and faculty members are mobilizing relief materials by way of food, clothes and medicine in Shillong and Guwahati another team of ten students both from B Tech and MSW of Azara campus returned from their holidays and left Tuesday, 30 September to help the flood victims who lost everything.

Urgent help is needed to clean up the devastation left by flood waters, gather bamboo and tin sheets to make shelters for the villagers.

Also, the children will need class rooms and books to prepare for upcoming exams.
