Sacred Heart Theological College commences their academic year

By Dn Daniel Cajee sdb
Shillong, Aug. 17. Shillong: The New Scholastic session (2016-17) of Sacred Heart Theological College Shillong commenced with a solemn inaugural ceremony in which the faculty and students were joined by Archbishop Dominic Jala of Shillong and five  Salesian provincial superiors. In his homily during the Holy Eucharistic celebration that he presided over, Archbishop Jala dwelt on the theme of Mercy. The Mass was followed by the official inauguration ceremony held in the Karotemprel Memorial hall. It began with invocation of the Holy Spirit by the Assembly. Father Gervasis, then, after a Scripture reading, led the Assembly in prayer. Archbishop Dominic Jala, the Chief Guest  and three members of the Governing Board lighted the lamp. The students of the college then sang the college anthem. Father V.T Jose welcomed the grand assembly.
Father George Maliekal (INS) invited all the students to enrol themselves in the school of Mary as they get ready to enrol themselves in SHTC for this semester. Father V.M Thomas (ING) reminded everyone that ''we stand on the shoulders of giants'' when he recalled the great achievements of Father Sngi and Father KD Sebastian. He also quoted Pope Francis saying that ''Jesus does not like journeys made halfway, doors half-closed, lives lived on two tracks'' with the same tone he invited those present to live lives pleasing to Jesus.

In his speech the Chief Guest asked all those present a pertinent question: ''Is religion making people violent?'' In the context of the ISIS' verbal attack on Pope Francis. Taking a cue from this he invited everyone to reflect on the impact of Theology on the students.

The keynote address was delivered by Father Nestor Guria, Provincial of Dimapur. He dedicated his speech to the late missionaries because the theme ''Go and teach'' impressed him the most. His speech was centered on the theme of evangelization and its importance.

Father Jerish Abraham proposed the vote of thanks.
