Platinum Jubilee Celebrations commence at Tripura's Historic Parish By Joseph Pulinthanath sdbShillong, Aug. 29. A medley of dances and songs transformed the serene campus of Shantir Rani Parish at Mariamnagar on the outskirts of Agartala, Tripura, into an irresistible hotspot on the evening of 28th August, 2014. Over 500 people from the neighborhood and town attended the cultural program, a run-up to the climax of the Platinum Jubilee celebrations of the Parish scheduled for Sunday, 31st August.
Mariamnagar, established in 1939, is the first parish in the diocese and one of the earliest Catholic presences in Northeast India. Its history dates back at least up to the first recorded visit by a priest in 1856. Holy Cross priest Fr. Louis Verite CSC, the then Pro Vicar Apostolic of the Bengal Vicariate visited Mariamnagar in 1856.
The 2014 celebrations mark the Platinum Jubilee of Mariamnagar Parish. It became a parish in 1939 with Fr. Raymond Massart CSC, its parish priest.
The evening program vividly and innovatively recreated the arrival of Fr. Massart and events that led to it through a presentation called 'Time Machine' put up jointly by the Salesian Pre-novices and the residents of Mariamnagar Village and directed by Fr. John Bosco Minj SDB.
Most Rev Lumen Monteiro CSC DD, Bishop of Agartala, addressed the gathering and extended his Jubilee wishes to Fr. Ronald Venadt SDB the Parish priest, the parishioners and the entire diocese. Fr. KJ Abraham CSC, the provincial superior of the Fathers of Holy Cross and Shri Abhishek Chandra, Commissioner of Agartala Municipal Corporation were among the dignitaries present for the cultural program.
The scintillating set of dances and songs presented by neighboring institutions and troupes, including a troupe from Information and Cultural Affairs, Govt of Tripura, kept the audience enthralled for over 2 hours.
Ecclesiastical dignitaries from various parts of North East and Bangladesh are scheduled to participate in the culmination of the celebrations on 31st August.
