Shillong, Aug. 5. The new Academic Year 2014-15 was inaugurated at Sacred Heart Theological College, Mawlai, Shillong on 5 August 2014. Archbishop Dominic Jala presided over the solemn Eucharistic Celebration invoking the gifts of the Holy Spirit. 'Minimalism is a dreadful thing in the study of theology', Archbishop Dominic exhorted during the homily. The Salesian Provincials of New Delhi, Kolkata, Guwahati, Dimapur and Silchar and several priests from Shillong concelebrated with him.

The official inauguration of the Academic Year took place soon after the Eucharistic celebration. Fr. Jose Vettath, Rector, welcomed everyone. Rev. Fr. Gulliermo Basaňes, General Councilor for Salesian Missions was the chief guest of the function.

After the lighting of the lamp, the assembly paid prayerful floral tribute to Fr. Sebastian Karotemprel, a stalwart of the College, who passed away on 20th July 2014.

Archbishop Dominic Jala, the Salesian Provincials of the Governing Board and Fr. Basaňes shared messages exhorting the staff and the students to make the new academic year a challenging experience of relating theology with God, others and self.

Fr. Barnes Mawrie, President of the College presented a brief report of the academic year 2012-13. Dr. T. B. Subba, Vice Chancellor of Sikkim University delivered the key note address on the topic: 'Understanding the Tribal Ethos of Northeast India'.

A remarkable feature of the inaugural function was the release of a Festschrift in honour of Dr. (Fr) Joseph Puthenpurakal, titled 'Excelling in Mission' edited by Dr. (Fr.) Paul Vadakumpadan SDB and Dr. (Fr.) Jose Varickasseril SDB.
