Non-Khasi Youth Get-together At Sacred Heart Theological College

Shillong, Sep. 16. After the success of the Khasi Youth Fest held on the 9th of September 2012 organised by the Sacred Heart Theological College, Mawlai, the college organised yet another grand youth fest for all the Non-Khasi youth of the North East on the 16th September 2012. This year's Youth Fest was organised as part of the preparation for the Platinum Jubilee of the college. The theme for the programme was 'Journeying with Christ; sharing our faith.'

Speaking on this occasion the Chief Guest at the Inaugural Function, Mr. Malcolm Tariang, Head of Department of English, St. Edmund's College recalled the association he had with the college. In his speech he stressed on the need of the young people to have faith in God. ''In this world of modern technology often young people are lost with no guidance and help. It is because of this that influence of companions and friends tend to lead them away from their dream and reality. Occasions like these should make them put their trust in the Almighty,'' he said.

The Guest of Honour for the Inaugural function Mr. Phera Rani, State's BJP President in his speech encouraged the young people to develop deep faith in God in all that they do. He wished the young people present for the occasion the grace to be leaders in future, to lead the society and the tribe they represent.

The afternoon's cultural programme was graced by the presence of Mr. James Sangma, MLA and member of the opposition, Government of Meghalaya. In his talk he stressed on the importance of faith that revolves round the lives of the young people. He reminded those present of the time when he was studying in Delhi. ''It was the richness of the culture of the North East and the faith I have in God and myself that kept me going in the place where people from North East are often considered as foreigners or outsiders,'' said Mr. James Sangma.

The cultural programme was a display of a variety of colourful dances of the different tribes of the North East. The rich cultural heritage of each tribe of the North East was richly portrayed by the students of the different communities studying in Shillong. Earlier, the Holy Mass and animation talk was presented by Fr. Theotimus Lakra Sdb, Youth and Movement co-ordinator from Dimapur. The Rector of the college, Rev Fr Jose Vettathe Sdb welcomed the gathering. The Programme ended with an Adivasi dance held at the college square.
