Don Bosco College Panjim organises National Seminar on Old Age Care & Welfare

Panjim, Feb. 26. A 02 day National Seminar on 'Old Age Care and Welfare' was organised at Don Bosco College, Panjim on 11 February 2020. Provincial of the Salesian Province of Panjim Father Felix Fernandes was the guest of honuor and R. Menaka, Collector North Goa District was the chief guest for the occasion.

On Day 01, Anjali Deshpande, Chairperson AJ Foundation Pune spoke on Health Issues and Challenges of Elderly and Promoting Healthy Aging. Jyoti Ratnaparkhi of Hospice Care Foundation USA made a presentation on Lifestyles, Wellbeing and Care Issues of the Elderly. Dattaprasad Pawaskar, Help Age India Manager dwelt on Social Programmes for Elderly. His presentation revealed that 90 percent of the elderly are from unorganized sectors and only 10 percent have access to pensions or financial support. He also highlighted the helpline number of Help Age India 18001801253, free physiotherapy sessions and the abuse that elderly face in families and in society. He also informed the audience about the growth of digital literacy among the elderly and the use of an app called, SOS (Save Our Seniors). Adv. Albertina Almeida, Human Rights Activist addressed the participants, after paper presentations by the students.
On Day 02, Dr. Shaila D'Souza spoke on Contemporary Issues of Elderly, Widows and Way Forward. She highlighted the importance of child-care leave for women and the change needed in the thinking from child care to family care leave. Students of CSIBER Cllege Kolhapur highlighted the social problems faced by elderly and young women and men through a street play. This was followed by a Poster presentation by the participating colleges which was assessed by Principal, DBC Dr. Cedric Silveira. Dr. Fredrick Rodrigues, Vice-Principal Fr. Angel College of Arts and Commerce, Goa, spoke on the Welfare Schemes and Programmes for Elderly in India. He said, ''the aged as a social category needed specialized attention.''
Siddhi Shet Mashelkar, Asst. Professor of Political Science, Government College of Arts, Science and Commerce, Quepem, Goa said, ''age friendly community needs to be built for the elderly so that they are able to live a dignified life. We all pass through the different stages of life and the elderly can be easily neglected by the younger generation. Thus a collective approach is needed for the young to changes and develop an age friendly community.'' The seminar ended with a candle light pledge to support the elderly.
