Parents Day at Don Bosco Youth Centre, Shirva

Panjim, Nov. 22. The Annual Parents Day was held at Don Bosco Youth Centre, Shirva on November 20, 2011. Parents of 18 boarders attended the programme. It was an interactive event wherein the various activities and the human formation of the boarders was discussed.
The Rector Fr. Maxim D'Souza along with Fr. Joe and Fr. Augustine presided at the Eucharist, after which refreshments were served. Informal interaction with the parents and the hostel boys with the screening of the movie ''Life of Don Bosco''was well received. Later, Fr. Rector explained about Don Bosco's vision and mission among the youth to the parents. He spoke of the ''preventive system of education''. He also explained briefly about the progress of the boys and the areas in which they should improve. He highlighted that this place was not merely a ''hostel'', but a family where the fathers, brothers and boys live and work together. He spoke on the ''life-skills'' that was communicated through the sodalities and weekly meeting. The ''house system'' that inculcates in the young a healthy competitive spirit and also to see to the overall formation of the human aspect. Regular retreats and recollections are held to see to the ''spiritual formation'' of the young. Besides regular games to keep them fit and healthy. Above all the Rector highlighted the facilities and the importance of studies, the time available and the need of study habits. He later spoke of the importance of working together as management and parents to motivate and encourage the children to pursue their studies.
The Parents in their sharing too expressed their views and opinions and appreciated the hard work, the tireless effort and dedication that is very clearly evident in the formation of the child. This was followed by a short slide show presentation of the hostel which gave the parents a glimpse of the various activities held during this year. The boys put up a cultural programme which was well prepared and was well appreciated by the parents. Many parents were surprised to see their sons, singing, acting speaking so confidently and even dancing. After the delicious lunch, the parents had the opportunity to meet the Salesians personally. The parents were grateful to the Salesians for taking good care of the boys and promised their full support.  Fr. Rector thanked and appreciated the Confreres and the boys for their hard work and support in making the event a memorable one. Indeed his dream still carries on....''
