India, Jun. 14.

The members of Boscom South Asia(Social Communication delegates of the provinces) attended a session on how to tackle media addiction on the digital platform, organized under the aegis of the Salesian School of Social Communication (SSSC) Rome. Dr Manoj Kumar Sharma, Professor of Clinical Psychology, NIHMANS, Bangalore, and founder and coordinator of SHUT Clinic (Service for Healthy Use of Technology), India's first tech deaddiction clinic, handled the session on June 9, 2022.

In his address to the digital Salesians, Dr Sharma articulated the dangers of media addiction affecting the mental and physical health of the youth. The session focused on Media Psychology: Understanding Digital Addictions, its Implications and Possible Approaches.

With his vast experience in the field and drawing inspiration from the various cases he has handled, Dr Sharma shared the causes, effects and remedies for media addiction. Due to excessive use of digital platforms, he suggested Nomophobia, Phantom vibration syndrome, Zero inbox syndrome, Selfitis, Digital amnesia, Cyberloafing, Binge-watching and Binge gaming as manifested in the person. He described the potential effects of increased screen time as low self-esteem, impulsivity and hostility, aggression, lack of social coping ability and social phobia. Dr Sharma suggested the GATHER approach (Greet, Ask, Tell, Help, Explain, and Return) to deal with such a situation.

The Communication Department of Salesian Congregation, Rome, has initiated the programme to inform and educate on various topics of interest in media as part of the SSSC (Salesian School of Social Communication). Experts from the different disciplines in media share their thoughts and views.
