Government of West Bengal Honours Don Bosco Mirik for Kanyashree Prakalpa Scheme

Kolkata, Aug. 23. Don Bosco High School, Mirik, bagged second prize for implementing the Kanyashree Prakalpa Scheme instituted by Honourable Chief Minister of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee. Kanyashree Prakalpa Scheme provides financial assistance to girls aged 13-18 of economically backward classes to pursue higher education and stop their untimely marriage. It has been given international recognition by the United Nations Department of International Development and UNICEF.

Don Bosco High School, Mirik, became the first private school in the Darjeeling district to implement Kanyashree Prakalpa Scheme. The Additional District Magistrate of Darjeeling, Smt. Banhishikha Dey, IAS, handed the Kanyashree award to Miss Eva Dewan, the nodal teacher for the school, on August 14, at the District Magistrate office in Darjeeling.

Don Bosco Mirik has been running the Scheme since 2017. Around 120 girls from classes 8 to 12 have registered for the Scheme. The girls also participate in various Kanyashree events organized at the block or the district level. ''Don Bosco girls have participated in various events such as Kanyashree Day, cultural programs, quiz, cleanliness drive and other social activities organized exclusively for Kanyahsree girls,'' said Miss Eva Dewan.

For the current year, a total of 23 girls have registered for the Scheme. It provides an annual scholarship of Rs. 700/- for the age group of 13 to 18 years and a one-time grant of Rs. 25000/- to a girl who turns 18 and is engaged in the academic or occupational pursuit and unmarried. Thirty-three girls are eligible for the one-time grant this year. Speaking about the impact of the Scheme in the lives of the girls, Lawrence Lepcha, a teacher involved in the Scheme, said, ''this had made the girls smart and active, and many of them pursue their higher education.''

Don Bosco High School, Mirik, is an English medium co-educational school under the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education, established in 2005. The school caters to the children of the tea garden in the Mirik Valley of the Darjeeling district.
