Panjim, Aug. 18. The Salesian Province of Saint Joseph Vaz, Panjim, began its sixth Provincial Chapter 2022, 'Go and Do Likewise,' by holding its first of the three scheduled sessions via Zoom online platform on August 17, 2021.
Father Felix Fernandes, Provincial, declaring the Chapter open, said the Provincial Chapter is a dynamic and an ongoing process where the whole Province comes together as one community with the mission to reflect and deliberate on being effective signs and bearers of God's love to the young. He then handed charge to the moderator Father Arvind Severes, who welcomed 37 elected members and gave the guidelines for the Chapter. The second meeting will be from November 3-5, 2021, and the final session from February 14- 19, 2022.

Regional Councillor of South Asia, Father Biju Michael Pulianmackal, addressing the Chapter said, the theme chosen, 'Go and Do Likewise,' is the mandate that Jesus gave after narrating the parable of the Good Samaritan. In the Gospel of Saint John, Jesus washes the feet of his disciples as a physical expression of the mandate and says, go and do likewise after His example. Drawing parallels from the life of St John Bosco, Father Michael said, the command to go and do likewise was translated for St John Bosco as to live, work and become a father and teacher for youth. He asked the chapter members to focus only on the person of Jesus Christ and Don Bosco in deliberating and discussing the Salesian identity, mission and future in the light of the GC 28 guidelines. He conveyed the wishes and prayers of the Rector Major for a successful and enriching Provincial Chapter.

Father Felix Fernandes, Provincial, tracing the steps to make the Provincial Chapter 2022 a success, recalled Father Romulo Noronha on his fifth death anniversary. Father Noronha, the first provincial delegate of the Province, was an inspiration for leadership and hard work. He guided the Province in the initial stages, and today he is interceding from heaven, said, Father Fernandes.

Moderator Father Severes then invited the members of the Preparatory Commission to present the themes of the Provincial Chapter. Father Edison Fernandes presented the first theme, 'Go and Do Likewise,' focusing on the guidelines given by the Rector Major, Father Angel Fernandez Artime. The second theme, on Salesian Identity, was presented by Father Ralin de Souza. The shared mission with a focus on the role of the laity in the Salesian mission, as the third theme, was presented by Father Tamatur Cardozo. Father Avin Carvalho presented the fourth theme on the Formation of Pastors of Today. The final presentation was by Father Joaquim Lobo on preparing youth for a sustainable future and new frontiers.

Post lunch, the members were assigned to the various commissions based on the preferences given by them. The members later discussed the methodology and the objectives of their respective commissions and presented them to the Chapter members.

The pre-novices presented a short video on the theme, 'Go and Do Likewise,' and the chapter members appreciated their insights and reflections. The moderator, Father Severes, proposed the vote of thanks and concluded the day.
