The minister hailing from the Ernakulam Constituency in Kerala appreciated the dedication and sacrifice of the Chrisitan Missionaries working in NE to develop the region through educational services and empowerment programmes especially of the youth.

Quoting a few lines from a very famous Malayalam song of the late sixties:  'Assam-il pokam' the minister said  for many Keralites,  Assam  was already a familiar place popularized by this song and  have come here  seeking  jobs even in the sixties.

V.M Thomas, the Provincial ING, welcoming the Minister to Don Bosco Institute, presented  him with the colourful hand-woven shawls and the recently released coffee table book: 'Mission Northeast India.' He lauded the efforts of the minister in the enactment of the Food Security Bill which will ensure at least a decent meal  per day to the millions of poor Indians.

About 30 years in active politics, the minister  started his political career in the Kerala politics becoming a minister of tourism and fisheries in the state government of Kerala and later went on to become a minister of state in agriculture and presently the union minister for consumer affairs, food and public distribution, Government of India.

Prior to joining politics, the hon'ble minister served as a  professor of Chemistry in Sacred Heart College, Thevara (Kochin) for almost 20 years where later he became the head of the department of chemistry.  The minister was accompanied by Mr. Sudhir Kumar IAS, secretary, food & Public distribution and Mr. Phinwell  Basumatary, the Regional Executive Director of FCI at Guwahati and a host of other officials.
