Gender Sensitivity Education launched to mark the Bicentenary of Don Bosco

New Delhi, Aug. 15. The Salesian Family collaborators launched the first ''Gender Sensitivity Education ''( GSE) - Training of Trainers, programme on August 11-13 at DBYES-Don Bosco Youth and Educational Services, Bariatu, Ranchi.

The Salesian Family collaborators launched the first ''Gender Sensitivity Education ( GSE) - Training of Trainers, programme on August 11-13 at DBYES-Don Bosco Youth and Educational Services, Bariatu, Ranchi.

The participants of the training programme were educators from schools, young at risk centers, catechists, social workers and young religious. Ms. Sapna Surin and Ms Sujaya Dangwar from TISS (Tata Institute of Social Science), Mumbai and young human rights activist of Ranchi-Mr. Gladson Dungdung conducted input sessions of the workshop.

This workshop was organized and coordinated by Fr. Noel Maddhichetty, SDB, Regional Delegate of the Salesian Family in collaboration is Don Bosco YaR Forum. In the inaugural session he outlined the orientations for the three day workshop. He said, though laws, regulations and campaigns in the country may create awareness, but the need of the hour is to bring about change in the mindset of the people towards gender sensitivity and equity.

The GSE workshop is organised for the educators, to make them as protagonists to promote the change of mindset in the young people through education. A series of GSE programme will be organised by Salesian Family, to mark the Bicentenary of Don Bosco who is lauded as a champion rights of the young people of his times.

After eliciting the expectations of the participants the resource persons clarified the concepts of ''Human Rights and Equity'' through various activity based programme. The difference between sex and gender were explained in a simpler way. The gender roles were narrated through various group activities. The participants enjoyed, drew messages and learnt a lot through games and group exercises.

The Human Rights Activist Mr. Gladson Dungdung dealt with the historical background and Constitutional basis of human rights. Ms. Sapna Surin dealt with Child Rights and UNCRC (United Nations on Rights of the Child)1989 that the four fundamental rights of the children: Right to survival, right to development, right to protection and right to participation.

Ms. Sujaya shared the Government Policies, Programs, Support Services, National Policy, Acts and Legislations for women. Fr. Ashok Kujur, SDB the Director DBYES presented the perspectives of the church on Human Rights anchoring on scripture. He also shared the UNESCO's four principles of Human Beings: to live, to learn, to love and to leave a legacy.

The third day of the seminar was devoted to the preparation and presentation of modules to take forward the Gender Sensitivity Education programme in their various settings to educate young people. The participants returned home with a commitment to launch the Gender Sensitive Education progamme in the city of Ranchi and to create an environment of friendly and safe city for women and young people.

The participants appreciated much and thanked the initiative of Fr. Noel Maddhichetty and Fr. Ashok Kujur, the Director and the Salesian team of Don Bosco-Bariatu for hosting this workshop to train and promote Gender Sensitivity Education.
