Think Green Keep it Clean- Youth become Influencers towards Climate Change

Mumbai, Sep. 21. PUNE -( 20th - 21st September, 2019):  'Madonna. 2019' - an Inter- Junior College Fest with the theme ''Think Green Keep it Clean'' is an initiative of the Don Bosco Junior College Pune, co - powered by Tolani Maritime Institute, Trinity School of Performing Arts, International Institute of Hotel Management (IIHM), Pride Globaltech Services Pvt. Ltd., Nandmani Stores, Haji Zakir Shaikh, Jain Bandhu and Melwin Holidays took off on a very festive note with nearly 2,000 youngsters participating from 25 Junior Colleges in Pune.  St Mira's Junior Girls College won the ''Madonna 2019'' Championship Award organised by Don Bosco Junior College at Yerwada, Pune
Thousands of young people from nearly 25 colleges in Pune participated and played an active role in protecting and improving the environment by adopting environmental friendly practices, recycling of different materials as well as preserving resources such as water and electricity and to reduce carbon footprints and transform the society.  The youth enjoyed participating in the sports and cultural extravaganza.  

On 21st September, Father Francis Gonsalves SJ   Dean of Studies, JDV, addressed the staff and students and asked them a question -Where am I going?  He spoke about  Greta Thunberg an environment activist of Sweden  and narrated her story of how in  August 2018, at 15 years of age she took time off  from school to demonstrate outside the Swedish parliament, holding up a sign calling for stronger climate action. Soon, other students engaged in similar protests in their own communities. Together they organized a school climate strike movement, under the name Fridays for Future.  She knew where she was going. God has created you.  You can make a difference.  Change the channel of your life.   You are not too small each one can make a difference.

In the evening, Mr. Jeevan Kumar Anand  from Anandvan (Forest of Joy) spoke  about  his journey of being an environmental activist and creating flora and fauna through partnerships and being a volunteer.  He encouraged the college students to volunteer at his site and to reduce their time spent on social media platform by 2 hours and volunteer in planting trees and protecting the environment.  This will reduce carbon footprints and save our environment.

The Don Bosco School and Junior and Senior  College sprawling lush green campus was filled with young talent during the sporting and cultural extravaganza held on the college campus.  College students participating in various competitions like Rangoli , Mehendi , Nail art, Poster making,  Face painting, Debates, Elocution, Essay writing, Group Singing, Solo singing, Solo dance, Group dance, Fashion Shows, Band, Street play, Chess, Table tennis, Football ,Basketball and Carrom tournaments, Quiz, Cooking with and without fire, saw determination and grit in achieving success.

The following Junior Colleges won the First prizes at the Madonna 2019- Inter Junior College Fest event.  Anglo Urdu High School & Junior College - Carrom Singles (Boys), Don Bosco Junior College - Elocution Competition, Carrom Singles (Girls), Cooking Without Fire, Football (Boys) and Essay Writing, Loyola Junior College - Face Painting, Quiz and Debate competition, N. M. V. Junior College - Solo Dance, Chess (Girls)and  Rangoli competition, Pune International Junior College - Fashion Show, S. N. B. P. Junior College, Morwadi - Chess (Boys), Football (Girls), St. Felix High School & Junior College - Cooking With Fire, St. Mira's Junior College - Poster Making, Mehendi, Basket Ball (Girls) and Street Play Competion, St. Patricks Junior College - Nail Art, St. Vincent's Junior College - Table Tennis (Boys), Symbiosis - Basket Ball (Boys), Jai Hind Junior College - Group Dance, Bishops Junior College, Camp - Group Singing, Solo Singing

Sakshi Singh, student from St Mira's College of Girls studying in STD XI, Arts participating in the Street Play said '' It took us three days to produce the Street Play on the topic of '' Think Green Keep it Clean''.   ''It was a team effort, I wrote the script and produced the play, the message was loud and clear- Save our Planet Earth and protect the girl child, refuse plastic and stop using fire crackers which pollute the environment''  said she.  The group she trained in preparing the skit were overjoyed in being part of this wonderful festival as they won the'' Madonna 2019'' Championship Trophy.

Kirthi Dominic, student from Don Bosco Junior College studying  in Std. XII Commerce A stream said '' I plan to commence an eco club in our college and start planting more trees and travel by bicycle to my college''  A successful event has been initiated by students thinking how to Go Green.  

Father  Bosco D'Mello plans to make the Don Bosco School and Junior and Senior College a eco friendly campus by fixing LED bulbs and Solar panels to cut carbon footprints after listening to one of the speakers.
Mrs. Dorothy , Teacher form  Pune International College which won the Fashion Show was elated and thanked the organisers for this wonderful Inter -Junior College Fest which encouraged students to think and be young influencers to Go Green.  ''My students put a lot of efforts and hours of practices to get ready for the Fashion Show.  I am really excited at winning the award by my students'' said she.  
Master Swayam Ghevade, a Std. XII , Science Student  from Pune International College  who won the Fashion show was excited at winning the award.  ''This is a glorious day in the life of our group.  This concept led me to respect the cultural diversity and respect religion too.  Kudos to all our teachers who motivated us and trained us to showcase our personalities'' said he.

Sudendhu Shah, of Bright Global Tech Services, Pune  motivated the students to be a role model and with dedication and hardwork  bear good fruits.

At the closing ceremony Father Donald Fernandez, SDB,  Principal of Don Bosco High School and Junior College, Seawoods, New Mumbai and Former Principal of Don Bosco High School and  Founder of  The Junior College,  Pune, in his message  put forth  3 types of people, jaw bones talkers (Those who speak negatively),  wish bones (Those who dream and do nothing), backbone (The action oriented). He challenged the youngsters to answer which category they belonged to?  He encouraged the students to Love Don Bosco and Stay young the Don Bosco Way.
Father Bosco D'Mello- thanked the Management and Staff  and collaborators in a very special way, Leo D'Souza (The Supervisor), Pearl Fernandes, Stalin Michael, Jagannath Kundu and Abhilash Singh for their tireless efforts. He also thanked the Sponsors and Benefactors.
