''Exercises in Peace Education'' now freely downloadable for Promoters of Peace By BIS CorrespondentMumbai, Aug. 20. At a time when various forms of violence and conflict continue to thrive across the globe, a spark of hope is ignited yet again in a little corner of South Asia with the publication of the revised 2018 edition of a teacher training manual first published in 2003.
Exercises in Peace Education is the resource manual we are talking about. It contains a series of lessons written for educators of South Asia for the purpose of promoting peace and nonviolence, especially among children and young people. Through experiential and group-participatory learning in formal or non-formal educational environments, students are encouraged to develop their knowledge, attitudes and skills in order to build more peaceful characters and to contribute to a more tolerant society. The lessons raise awareness, provoke thinking, challenge stereotypes, point to solutions and incite to action. To be relevant to all South Asians without distinction, an attempt has been made to sustain a multi-ethnic, pluri-cultural and inter-religious viewpoint. The manual is freely downloadable at www.dbway.in
The Exercises are designed to educate young people from ages 5 to 17. The themes taken up for reflection, discussion and involvement, albeit at an introductory level, are: discovering the self, reaching out in friendship, appreciating diversity, learning to collaborate, dealing with bullying, resolving conflicts, creating a peaceful environment, developing a culture of peace.
The author, Peter Gonsalves, is committed to education for change. He founded Tej-Prasarini in 1995, to provide media resources that focus on issues of human and social development. After a decade of training teachers, community builders and youth leaders in media education, he created the 'Quality Life Education Series' of teacher training manuals of which this volume is a part. He is currently professor at Salesian University, Rome. His other publications include Exercises in Media Education (Tej-Prasarini, 1999), Clothing for Liberation (Sage, 2010), Khadi: Gandhi's Mega Symbol of Subversion (Sage, 2012) and Gandhi and the Popes (Peter Lang, 2015).
'Quality Life Education' offers, to those interested in the development of young people, a more reflection-on-life and value-oriented system of education. It promotes the participatory, inductive and democratic methods of educating to complement the syllabus oriented, deductive and formal classroom approach generally employed in educational institutions. Exercises in Peace Education, is the fourth in the series of 'Quality Life Education Manuals', following Exercises in Media Education, Exercises in Education to Love and Exercises in Education to Creativity.
Those in India planning to organize short courses for teachers in the use of the book during the months of July and August 2019 may please contact the author before January 2019 at gonsalves.p@gmail.com.
