Mumbai, Aug. 20. A Pope Francis emoji has been launched on Twitter ahead of next week's World Meeting of Families festivities and the papal visit to Ireland.

The papal emoji shows a cartoon image of Pope Francis' face in front of Ireland's green, white and gold tricolour.
An emoji is a small digital image or icon used to express an idea or emotion in electronic communication. Twitter has used emojis in the past to mark special occasions and major events such as the World Cup, the Super Bowl, the Olympics and the Eurovision Song Contest.

The Irish papal emoji can be generated using numerous hashtags including #PapalnEirinn,
#WMOF2018 and #FestivalOfFamilies.

Twitter has previously used similar emojis to celebrate papal visits to the United States and Latin America.

Organisers of the World Meeting of Families have expressed their delight at the digital tribute and explained that it opens up a new way of connecting families and the faithful together.

''Pope Francis himself is a tweeting pope with millions of followers on Twitter,'' said Brenda Drumm, media & communications manager for the World Meeting of the Families 2018.

''This pope emoji is a wonderful way to connect the conversation on Twitter about Pope Francis' visit to Ireland for our global gathering of families at WMOF2018.

''We're excited to see the Irish version of a pope emoji being launched,'' she added.

''We've previously seen how well the American and Latin American emojis were received on his visits there.''

Meanwhile, Karen White, Twitter's director of public policy for Europe, suggested that the World Meeting of Families and the Irish papal visit would definitely be trending on Twitter.

''The visit of Pope Francis is one of the biggest events happening in Ireland this year,'' she said.

''Naturally many people will be using Twitter to discuss his time here. We want to encourage everyone across the world to join the conversation on Twitter about his visit to Ireland.

''We've created this special emoji for people to use,'' she added.
