Kolkata, Mar. 11. Salesian College Sonada with its three years old campus at Siliguri has been awarded 'A' Grade by the NAAC (National Assessment and Accreditation Council) Bangalore, on March 10, 2012.
The Re-Accreditation Report (RAR) an outcome of the self study and self evaluation of the college submitted to the Central Ministry of Human Resource Development Agency, NAAC way back in August 2011. It was followed by a three member peer team consisting of Prof. Satinder Singh, Pro Vice Chancellor, Guru Nanak University, Amritsar, Prof. Rajan Varghese, Principal, Marthoma College of Management, Kochi, and Prof. Nishi Pandey, head, Department of English, Lucknow University visiting the college to verify the report in the month of November 2011.

The Report of the Visit which was submitted to the Principal by the Chairperson of the Team was to be divulged to the public only on approval of the Executive Committee of NAAC which meets once in three months. After yesterday's meeting the results have been uploaded on its website: The assessment is a very transparent process taking into account every stake holder of the institution and the public perception of the role the institution plays in the locality it is placed. The Cumulative Grade Point Average, a calculation of the points scored on each of the seven areas of assessment - Teaching Learning, Curriculum, Research and Consultancy, Infrastructure and Management, Innovative Practices, Student Support Services and Extension Activities - by the college is 3.16 out of a total of 4. Salesian College is the first college in North Bengal University to get Re-accredited and the very first college to get a Grade A with 3+ score.

Salesian College on the verge of celebrating its Platinum Jubilee was first established in 1933 at Shillong and first affiliated to the University of Calcutta in 1935. It was shifted to Sonada in 1938 after a massive fire destroyed the buildings. Ever since the education of the local population, especially the youth, has been a concern of the college, though it materialised in its full force from 2000 when the local students were admitted for their graduation along with the Salesian trainee students doing their philosophical studies in preparation for taking on the mandate of joining the Don Bosco International Education Society.

The Report highlights the achievements of the college since its first accreditation in 2004 and the concerted effort made by the management and teaching community to build on its assets. The number of publications, the college journal, the research seminars, the extension activities, the involvement of the students in the outreach programmes and campus cleanliness drive are all identified as some of best practices of the institution. The college offers as of now Arts (English, History, Education, Economics and Philosophy), Science (computer with Maths and Stats), Commerce (Accountancy and management) BBA and BPh. The campus is gearing up to offer in the coming session Geography honours, Psychology Honours, BLIS, Political Science and BCA. The post graduation programmes of MBA and MCA of Don Bosco University, besides MCom of IGNOU are also on offer for the session ahead.

Salesian College was granted the status of College of Excellence in February 2010 by University Grants Commission. The A Grade attained by the College from NAAC is valid for another five years and places it on its way towards seeking the status of an Autonomous College and that of a University eventually.
