Human Rights Education: Training of Teachers in Kolkata

Kolkata, May. 17. A three day Training of Teachers of Don Bosco Technical Schools in the Salesian Province of Kolkata, was organized by the Don Bosco Development Society, Kolkata from 13th to 15th May, 2011 at Nitika Don Bosco. Basing on Human Rights Education a curriculum was developed by Mrs. Bridgit John and Mr. John Joseph.

There were nine participants from various institutes namely Don Bosco Technical Institute Park Circus, Don Bosco Technical School Liluah, Don Bosco Self Employment Research Institute Mirpara, Don Bosco Technical School Krishnagar and St. Joseph Vocational Training Centre Dumka. The training was animated by Mrs. Bridgit John and Mr. John Joseph.

The sessions on the first day dealt with these topics: An Introduction to Labour Laws, Directive Principles of State Policy, An Introduction to Various Acts, The Equal Remuneration Act, The Minimum Wages Act & The Weekly Holidays Act.

In the sessions which followed on the following day Mrs. Bridgit John explained The Trade Union Act, The Sexual Harassment Act, The Maternity Benefit Act, The Payment of Wages Act, The Constitution of India & The Contract Labour Act.

The last day of training included sessions on The Payment of Gratuity Act, The Factories Act, The role of the Church, The Payment of Bonus Act which were presented & discussed by Mrs. Bridgit John and some inputs on Industrial Disputes were discussed by Mr. John Joseph. The sessions included group activities as quiz competition, FAQ, group discussion, role play etc...

The curriculum has been prepared by Mrs. Brigit John an expert in curriculum development in collaboration with Mr. John Joseph, vice president (Group HR) from Jai Balaji Group. The interactive and activity based training was well appreciated by the participants who expressed their preparedness to impart the same to their students.

Fr. MC Jose the Director of Don Bosco Development Society appreciated the efforts of Mrs. Bridgit John and Mr. John Joseph during the concluding ceremony. The resource persons were thanked by Mr. Stanley from Don Bosco Liluah.

Human Rights Education has been given a new thrust in the Salesian Congregation by Rev. Fr. Pascual Chavez the Rector Major. In view of imparting basic rights and responsibility to the students being prepared for the job markets, this an initiative of Don Bosco Development Society, under the direction of Fr. Remesh Cherian, in collaboration with L'Albero Della Vita, a Milan based agency in developing a curriculum for the vocational training institutes.
