Kolkata, Apr. 6. Br. Joseph Paranthara, (PJ Joseph) passed away in Remedy Nursing Home, Kolkata at 6.00 AM, on 6th April, 2011 due to a massive cardiac arrest.  A Requiem Mass was celebrated in Provincial House, Kolkata at 10.30 AM today, participated by many confreres and members from the neighbouring institutions. The Funeral rites will be held in Bandel Basilica at 1.00 PM on Saturday, 9th April, 2011.
Br. Joseph had been ailing for quite a long time with kidney problems, in Provincial House, Kolkata. He was taken to the Remedy Nursing Home a few days back as he had stopped his regular intake of food.  After resuming dialysis in the nursing home, he suffered a massive cardiac arrest this morning.

Fr. Alancherril Sebastian former provincial and his companion presided over the Eucharist, concelebrated by Fr. MC Joseph Economer, Fr. Anil Toppo Secretary to the Provincial and other confreres of the Provincial House Community and the neighbouring Salesian institutions.

Introducing the Mass Fr. Sebastian said that their batch was the first group of aspirants recruited by Fr. Joseph Bachierello, the then Rector of the aspirantate in Sonada. The twelve young apostles joined the seminary on 28th February, 1948.  ''In the demise of Br. Joseph I have lost a good friend and companion'' said Fr. Sebastian.

Fr. MC Joseph during the homily gave a brief life sketch of Br. Joseph who worked in various Salesian settings especially as a bursar.  He said that Br. Joseph was instrumental in constructing Nazareth Bhavan (Novitiate) at Siliguri and Savio Bhavan at Azimganj.  After a nine month course in Agricultural Farming Br. Joseph took charge of the Krishnagar Farm and brought it up to a certain standard.  He was also specialized in root medicines and magnetic therapy, helping many poor people in the villages through this form of service.  He was the founder of the Sati Magnetic Therapy Centre in Berhampore. ''In all these undertakings, he had the sole desire to help everyone in need'' said Fr. MC Joseph.

After the Mass the body was blessed by Fr. MC Joseph, surrounded by all the confreres and friends.  Fr. Provincial and Vice Provincial were away due to their assignments. A solemn funeral service will be held in Bandel Basilica on 9th April, 2011 at 1.00 PM.

Kolkata Province has recently lost a number of confreres. We are still cherishing the memory of Fr. CK George who departed from us on 20th March, 2011.  Commenting on this turn of events Fr. MC Joseph said in a consoling tone ''God calls our confreres to be with Him to pray for our province. They are in heaven interceding for us.''
