Kolkata, Mar. 7. University Grants Commission Eastern Regional Office, sponsored state level seminar on ''Promoting NMEICT - INFLIBNET e‐Resources in North Bengal & Sikkim'' was organised at Salesian College auditorium, Siliguri jointly by Salesian College and ABN Seal College, Coochbehar.
The Seminar began on 25th February, 2011 at 9.30 am with registration followed by lighting of the lamp by the chief guest Sri PK Ghosh, Finance Officer, University of North Bengal. Thereafter Fr (Dr) George Thadathil, Principal, Salesian College delivered the welcome address, welcoming the resource persons, paper presenters, staff and students who numbered over 80 persons in all. He also presented his thoughts on the seminar saying that resources of north Bengal & Sikkim are varied and promotion of e‐resources in the region is yet another dimension we need to look into and that with the evolution of technology the notion of 'self' as we are aware of today, is also undergoing changes.

The College choir animated by Fr. Nirmol Gomes performed the prayer song and Madhuri Lepcha of B Com I year presented the welcome dance. This was followed by the inaugural address by Sri PK Ghosh, Chartered Accountant cum Finance Officer, University of North Bengal, wherein he highlighted the importance of access to knowledge which is mostly digitized in this new millennium, to be leaders in the world as American and European countries have shown the way. He pointed out that the efforts to expand knowledge accessibility across the country have much potential and hidden power. To this effect MHRD is also giving importance on harnessing knowledge by way of providing good internet connection to the institutes of higher learning. He appreciated the host institution for doing its share in this regard.

The occasion of the seminar was utilized by the publications division of the college to release its three publications. Fr. (Dr) Nirmol Gomes introduced the college magazine ''Sparkle'', and Mr Peter Lepcha, the college bi‐annual journal Salesian Journal of humanities and social Sciences, and Fr George Thadathil the monograph by Dr. Pushpa Joseph on Feminist Hermeneutics: A contextual Reconstruction. These were released by Sri PK Ghosh, the chief guest, Dr Arun Kumar Chakraborty, resource person and Prof. Lalitha Rai Ahmed, Principal, APC Roy Government College, Siliguri and participant at the seminar respectively.

The Technical sessions that followed highlighted various aspects of the fast emerging e‐resource scenario in the country and the world. Dr Ashok Rai of Inflibnet, Ahmedabad and Arun Kumar Chakraborty of Bose Institute, Kolkata were the chief resource persons and there were four other papers presented by two assistant professors each of the Departments of Computer Science, University of North Bengal and Salesian College respectively. The topics covered included ''Need for National Knowledge Resource Consortia: Its compact in College Libraries'', ''Electronic Resource Management: a gift to modern Education'' ''E‐Learning through Moodle'', ''Use of e‐Resources in Education & Research'' and ''Electronic books''.

The day's programme concluded with the valedictory session at which Fr MA Joseph, Rector and Principal, Don Bosco School presided and gave away the certificates. The Organizing secretary of the seminar, Mr Sandeep Singh presented the report of the seminar and the convener, Fr Dr Nirmol Gomes proposed the vote of thanks.
