Hyderabad Welcomes Don Bosco

By Fr Santiagu Thomas Sdb
Hyderabad, Sep. 6. Don Bosco, the saint of the young reached the land of the Sultans (the historical city of Hyderabad) at 6 pm on the 6th of September 2011.  The Salesian confreres and the parishioners of Bandlaguda, alongwith the priests, religious and devotees from the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad were present in earnest at the Shrine of Don Bosco to receive the one who has touched the lives of so many young people.
The concelebrated Eucharist by Rt. Rev. Thumma Bala, the archbishop of Hyderabad, the veneration of the Relic and the youth vigil were the highlights of the day.
The youth and the faithful along with the Salesians waited eagerly to welcome the Relic of the Saint they love so much.  'Viva Don Bosco', 'Jai ho Don Bosco', 'Long Live Don Bosco' rent the air as the Relic arrived in the twin cities.  The casket was received with a motorcade  procession accompanied by the Military Band from the Artillery Centre.

Rev. Fr. Raminedi Balaraju, the Provincial of the Salesian Province of Hyderabad, welcomed the casket while Rt. Rev. Thumma Bala, the Archbishop of Hyderabad blessed the casket. Thereafter  the procession reached the Shrine of Don Bosco.  In his introductory words the Archbishop thanked the Rector Major and the Province of St Joseph, Hyderabad for giving the faithful and the people of Andhra Pradesh a chance to receive the blessings of one of the great saints of the Church.  In his homily, the Archbishop described Don Bosco as a man of Action, a man of Prayer, and a poor man.  He also emphasised the three devotions of Don Bosco: devotion to the most Holy Eucharist, devotion to the Blessed Mother Mary help of Christians and submission to the Pope.

The presence of Shri Shyam Babu, the Principal Secretary to the State of Andhra Pradesh, Mrs Aruna Bahuguna IPS and Mr Gopu Bala Reddy, added colour to the occasion. The parishioners, the religious and the youth of the parish spent time with Don Bosco in prayer and veneration. The youth expressed their love and deep admiration for their Saint through their active participation in the youth vigil.

The casket of Don Bosco was earlier handed over by the Vice-Provincial of Bangalore Province at Bidar. It makes a wide trip of Andhra Pradesh till September 21, 2011.
