Arunachal gets its first audio Bible

Guwahati, Nov. 20. . Itanagar - A Salesian school in Arunachal has made a landmark contribution to the repository of a tribe's literature using digital technology to reach both educated and illiterate masses.

Don Bosco School Doimukh teachers and students prepared the very first audio Bible comprising of the entire New Testament in Nyshi language of Arunachal Pradesh.

Salesian Bishop George Palliparambil of Miao diocese in Arunachal Pradesh released the DVD and pendrive version of the audio Bible ''Aogeda ge yale'' (Heavenly Echo) in a colourful ceremony held at Don Bosco Doimukh, near Itanagar on 15 November. The District Collector of the state capital Itanagar Mr. Mige Kamki received the first copy.

This initiative is part of the on-going celebration of the bicentenary of the birth of Don Bosco scheduled to end on 16 August 2015.

''As printed books are not common in Nyishi language and people find it difficult to read we hit upon an audio format which will help people to hear the Word of God in their language,'' says Salesian Fr. Madathiparambil Josekutty Thomas who came up with the project.

With the blessing and guidance of Doimukh Parish priest Salesian Fr. Thuruthiyil Sebastian, a six member team read the entire New Testament aided by the technical assistance from various quarters.

''Production of this kind audio Bible is first of its kind in any of the tribal languages in North East India,'' claims initiator of the project Fr Madathiparambil who worked in the region for number of years.

''it is fitting that during this bicentenary year, the Gospel reverberates in the ears of the people among whom the sons of Don Bosco popularized the Gospel in their own tongues,'' He added.

Several dignitaries and a huge gathering of over one thousand people attended the event which is a matter of pride not only to the Nyshi Christian community but also to the young and vibrant church of Arunachal Pradesh.

The updated printed version of Nyishi New Testament was released a month ago with the help of Fiat Mission, a Catholic lay movement dedicated to the spread of the Word of God.

The Nyishi tribe is one of the principal inhabitants of Arunachal Pradesh spread across five districts of the state viz., Papum Pare, Lower Subansiri, Kurung Kumey, East Kameng, parts of Upper Subansiri. They are also found in the Sonitpur and North Lakhimpur districts of the neighbouring state of Assam.

Numbering around 300,000 people makes them the most populous tribe of Arunachal Pradesh. They are closely followed by the combined tribes of the Adis and the Galos (Abors). The Nyishi language belongs to the Sino-Tibetan family.
