Guwahati, Aug. 31. Fr. Joseph Parippil, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, 30th August 2013, after he suffered a massive heart attack  and was admitted at Nanavati Hospital, Mumbai.

Fr. Joseph Parippil, who had left Guwahati to go to Kerala yesterday morning in order to spend three weeks with his dear ones at home before he took up his next assignment in Bosco Mount Tura, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, 30th August 2013. He was 77 years old.

As per the reports, he suffered a massive heart attack during the flight to Mumbai. The airport authorities rushed him to the Nanavati Hospital from the airport and informed me and Fr. Solomon. I contacted the Salesian Fathers in Mumbai Province [Fr. Savio, Edwin and Godfrey] who immediately reached the hospital and rendered all the support needed.

In the hospital Fr. Parippil underent an angiogram, and the doctors discovered that two of his arteries were blocked. He was immediately given stents. The doctors kept me informed from time to time and at one moment the doctors alerted that he went into comma. They asked for my consent for a high-risk surgery. Having consulted the available confreres near me, I gave the permission to go ahead with the surgery which however did not yield satisfactory results.

At 07.55 pm, the doctors officially confirmed that he was no more.

Fr. Joseph Parippil was secretary to the Archbishop of Guwahati from 9th April 2006 to 31st July 2013. In the first week of August he was admitted in St. John's hospital for 4 to 5 days for treatment of asthma. The doctors then suspected a few symptoms of cancer, but the tests were negative and he got discharged. From then on he was staying in Don Bosco Provincial House community, Guwahati, doing normal activities.

Fr. Joseph Parippil was born to Mr. Joseph Parippileetathottu and Mrs. Brigitta Muloparampil on 10th April, 1936 at Poovarany, in the diocese of Palai, Kerala. He entered the Salesian Novitiate at Yercaud, on 17th May 1955, and professed on 24th May 1956. He made his Final Profession at Shillong on 26th May 1962. He was ordained a priest on 17th April 1966 at Shillong.

As a young Religious: From 1956 to 1958 he did his philosophical studies at Sonada in Darjeeling. From January 1959 to December 1959 he did his Practical Training at Don Bosco Technical School Shillong. He was a good and effective assistant and teacher and endeared himself to everyone. In 1960, he completed his B.A. at Sonada. From 1961 to 1962 he did another year of Practical Training at Don Bosco Guwahati. Already as a young religious he had displayed a rare religious commitment and maturity.

A Priest forever: On completing his Practical Training, he was sent to Shillong to pursue his Theological Studies at Sacred Heart College, Mawlai, in July 1962. As the Sacred Heart College at Mawlai was closed down due to the Chinese Aggression he was sent to Kotagiri to continue his theological studies from January 1963. However, to complete his final years of theology he came back to Sacred Heart College at Mawlai from 1964 to 1966.

He was a serious student and gave himself wholeheartedly to his intellectual formation excelling in many fields. He prepared himself well and looked forward to the day of his Ordination with eager longing!

After his ordination, he was appointed to Don Bosco Shillong as councillor [1966-1969]. Thereafter he worked for an year in Don Bosco Maligaon [1969-1970]. For the next five years he was the first headmaster of Don Bosco Borivili, Bombay [1970-1975]. In 1975 he was appointed as the Rector of Don Bosco Tura, which he continued to be up to 1985. From there he went to Barpeta Road as  the Parish Priest and Rector [June 1985 - December 1990].

In 1991 he was sent to Salesian Pontifical University, Rome, for a Licentiate in Canon Law. After he returned from Rome in 1993 he was appointed as the Provincial Secretary. From 1994 to 1995 he took up charges as the Administrator in Don Bosco Guwahati. From 1996 to 2004 he taught Canon Law to the students of Theology in Mawlai. In 2004 he became the Rector of Salesian Training Centre [STC], Shillong.

IN April 2006, he was appointed Secretary to the Archbishop of Guwahati, where he rendered noble services until the end of July this year.

Gratitude: As I conclude, I would like to place on record my personal gratitude and that of the Salesians of Guwahati Province. In the first place, I thank God our loving Father, for the beautiful life of Fr. Joseph Parippil. As I offer our heartfelt Condolences to his dear ones who were waiting for his arrival  at home yesterday, I thank them personally for their love and care for Fr. Parippil. Thank you dear fathers, brothers, sisters and all of you friends of Fr. Parippil for having come to bid him farewell. Let us be assured of a powerful intercessor in heaven!
