Assam Sahitya Sabha appoints Dr. Stephen Mavely SDB as the Chief Adviser of its E-Journal

By Father. Bivan R. Mukhim
Guwahati, Aug. 22. Father (Dr.) Stephen Mavely SDB, Vice Chancellor, Assam Don Bosco University has received an invitation from the Assam Sahitya Sabha requesting him to be their Chief Advisor for the e-journal of the Sabha.
In the letter dated 1st August, 2016 the President of the Assam Sahitya Sabha Dr. Dhrubajyoti Bora and Secretary Shri. Naba Jyoti Borah wrote, ''We have the pleasure to inform you that Assam Sahitya Sabha is going to launch an e-Journal to provide a platform for the new generation and encourage the scholars to publish research and analytical writing on literature, Culture, politics, history etc., of North Eastern India. To make the venture successful your name has been proposed as the Chief Adviser of the Editorial Board of the said Journal.  I am directed to attach herewith a letter from Sahitya Sabha requesting your kind consent in this regard. We hope your valuable consent and suggestions would make the entire endeavour a success.''

Responding to the invitation of the Sahitya Sabha, Father (Dr.) Stephen Mavely said that he feels honoured to receive the request to be the Chief Advisor for the Sahitya Sabha's e-journal.  ''Though my knowledge of Assamese is limited, I consent to your request,'' he said. ''I will be glad to help in whatever way possible to make the journal a success that will serve the larger interests of our society (I say 'our society' because I have spent 54 years of my life here in the North-East),'' the Vice Chancellor added.

Father Stephen believed that the request by the Sabha is a great recognition of the work the Salesians are doing in the North-East. ''After all the negative publicity we got last year on the statue issue, this will be a welcome breather for our works in Assam,''

The Assam Sahitya Sabha is the most important literary organization of Assam, and was constituted for the development of Assamese language, literature and culture. Another important objective was to work for enriching the indigenous languages of the state. The Sabha has achieved the distinction as a pioneering literary organization in the country.
