Guwahati Salesian Province gets a new Vice Provincial By Fr. Bivan MukhimGuwahati, May. 1. Fr. Januarius S. Sangma, the Rector and Principal of Don Bosco School, Tura, has been appointed Vice Provincial of the Salesian Guwahati Province by the Superior General Father Angel F. Artime. He will replace Fr. Thomas Lakra who served as the Vice Provincial during the last three years.
Father Sangma was born on 16 Feb 1965 in Tura, Meghalaya. He is the fourth child of Mr George N. Marak and Mrs Lucia S. Sangma. He did his early schooling in Don Bosco School, Tura and joined the aspirantate of Savio Juniorate, Shillong in the year 1980. Two of his sisters became Salesian nuns, of whom Sister Bernadette S. Sangma, passed away a few days before his appointment as the Vice Provincial, and the other sibling, Sister Marcellina S. Sangma is the Provincial Economer of the Salesian sisters of Shillong Province.
Father Sangma made his first profession on 24 May 1987 in the Salesian novitiate at Sunnyside, and his final profession in Tura. He was ordained a priest in 1997. His first appointment as a priest was to Don Bosco School, Kokrajhar as the Asst. Parish Priest and Vice Principal of the school. He was also the Vice Principal of St. Anthony's School, Shillong from 2000 to 2005. In 2005, he was appointed as Rector of Don Bosco, Tura. In 2008, he was send to Don Bosco College, Tura as the Vice Principal. From 2008 till date, he is the Rector and the Principal of Don Bosco Higher Secondary School, Tura.
Fr. VM Thomas, the provincial superior, while officially conveying the news to the confreres expressed his happiness at the appointment of Father Sangma. He also expressed his thanks to Fr. Thomas Lakra, the out-going vice provincial saying, ''I would like to thank Rev. Fr. Thomas Lakra for all the support extended to me and for his dedicated and friendly service in the capacity as vice provincial for the past 3 years'', Fr. Thomas wrote.
The appointment will come into effect from May 24, 2015.
