Fr. Scaria Nedumala laid to rest

Dimapur, Mar. 18. Fr. Scaria Nedumala, who passed away on March 15, at Imphal, was laid to rest at the Salesian Cemetery at Salesian College, Dimapur, on March 17, 2012. A large gathering of priests, religious, lay faithful, Family members, relatives and friends bid him a tearful farewell.
The requiem Mass was presided over by Rev. James Thoppil- Bishop of Kohima, accompanied by Rev. Jose Mukala - former Bishop of Kohima and Rev. George Palliaparambil - Bishop of Miao.
Others who participated were Fr. James Poonthuruthil, Provincial of Dimapur, Fr. Joe Almeida, Provincial of Guwhati, Fr. Tomy, Vicar General of the Archdiocese of Imphal, Fr. Ethelbert Minj, Vice Provincial of Guwhati, Fr. Nestor Guria, Vice Provincial of Dimapur, Administrator of Tezpur diocese, Representative of Kolkata Province, Sr. Provincials. There were over 140 priests and more than 400 faithful.
In his homily, Fr. James Poonthuruthil, Provincial, briefly explained the circumstances which led to the sad and sudden demise of Fr. Scaria. He said ''it is unbelievable that on his 74th Birthday, we were bidding him final farewell from this world.
Enumerating his qualities, Fr. Provincial, underscored that Fr. Scaria was a sociable, friendly and an endearing person. As a Salesian, he was a convinced, dedicated, a man totally for God and his fellow human beings. As a missionary he was a generous and caring shepherd, committed to his flock, warm hearted who loved the land and the people wherever he worked. His Marian piety was extraordinary and always encouraged filial devotion to the Mother of God, he further said.
After the Eucharist, condolence messages were given by the representatives of various groups. Fr. CC Jose, Rector, spoke on behalf of the community in which Fr. Scaria spent his last days. He said that Fr. Scaria, was a community man and drew his strength from the Eucharistic Lord. Fr. Mathew Pulingathil, Pioneer Provincial of Dimapur, and with whom Fr. Scaria was closely associated in the initial stages of the Provice as the first Vice Provincial, spoke on behalf of the Province, describing him, as a caring person, sociable and loving person.
Fr. T.T. Joseph, representing the novices whose Socius Fr. Scaria was at Sunnyside, Shillong, called Fr. Scaria, an enthusiastic and zealous missionary and a person who could manage any type of crisis, because of his endearing personality. Bro. Kholi, spoke on behalf of the aspirants whose Rector Fr. Scaria was at Rua Home, Jorhat. Mr. Kapani, spoke on behalf of the Catholic community of Mao, among whom, Fr. Scaria worked for several years, calling him a loveable, friendly and sociable person. Fr. Scaria Nedumala, SJ, the nephew of Fr. Scaria, spoke on behalf of the family, expressing his gratitude to the congregation, Province, community and to all who cared for Fr. Scaria, especially in his last days and moments.
After the condolence messages, the mortal remains were taken in process to the cemetery where Fr. James Poonthuruthil, performed the last rites before lowering them into the grave.
It may be noted that Fr. Scaria who died of a cardiac attack on 15 March, at Imphal, was born on 17 March 1939 and made his first profession on 24 May 1961 and ordained on 19 December 1970. He was 73. Originally belonging to the Province of Chennai, he volunteered for the missions in the North East. He worked in Mao, Dibrugarh, Jorhat, Imphal, Itanagar, Shillong. He was the first Vice Provincial of Dimapur Province from 1982 - 1988 and the second Provincial from, 1989 - 1995.
