Dimapur, Nov. 27. A week long workshop was organized on Journalism for Social Action at Salesian College of Higher Education, Dimapur, for the 44 outgoing students of the college, with the aim of bringing awareness of the impact of media in society and how media can be an effective and powerful tool for bringing about reform and development in the society.
''Media studies'' said Fr. Joseph Thuruthel, Principal of the College, Dimapur, ''has become part and parcel of academic studies'', at the inaugural session on 21 November. Right use of the media tools can be of great help in the academic pursuit of the students, he further noted.

Fr. Tarcisius Toppo, Director of Bosco Communications, Dimapur, an NGO, much involved in media and communications was the main resource person for the workshop. While getting theoretical knowledge of the inner intricacies of Journalism and the working of the Newspaper industry, the outgoing students, hailing from various parts of the country, particularly the North Eastern states, also had a first-hand experience in writing hard and soft news articles.

Theoretical inputs included, basic knowledge about the different parts of a newspaper, writing lead, writing feature stories, editorials, letter to the editor, traits of a journalist, photojournalism, journalism ethics etc.

The field experience of going out and interacting with the people of Dimapur town formed a major part of interviewing and reporting. The programme concluded on 26 November amidst high level of satisfaction and sense of achievement.

It may be noted that this is fifth consecutive year that this workshop has been organized for the final year students.
